VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO ADELPHI, 3-1, IN NE-10 ACTION
Syracuse, N.Y. – Kaitlyn DeStefano recorded a double-double to lead Adelphi University to a 3-1 win over the Le Moyne College volleyball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.
The Panthers opened the match by taking the first game, 26-24. After the Dolphins jumped out to a 13-8 lead, Adelphi rattled off five straight points to tie the score at 13-apiece. The teams then traded points, resulting in a 19-18 Le Moyne lead. The Panthers followed with three straight points around a Le Moyne timeout to open up a 21-19 advantage. After the Dolphins tied the score at 21, 23 and 24, Chelsea Overholt landed back-to-back kills to end the game.
Adelphi doubled its lead in the match with a 25-16 victory in the second game. Le Moyne opened the game with six of the first nine points, but the Panthers responded with eight consecutive points and 12 of the next 14 to take a 15-8 lead. The Dolphins countered with four straight points and seven of the next eight to pull within one point. However, the Panthers answered with six straight points and nine of the game's final 10 points, the last of which came on a kill by Overholt.
The Dolphins stayed alive in the match by winning the third game, 25-19. After the teams went back-and-forth over the opening 16 points of the game, resulting in a 9-7 Adelphi lead, the Dolphins tallied seven straight points to take a five-point advantage. The Panthers posted a 7-3 run to pull within 17-16, but the Dolphins scored five of the next six points to regain their five-point lead. After Adelphi scored consecutive points to make the score 22-19, senior middle hitter Morgan McDermott (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) landed a kill off a feed from sophomore setter Megan Maisonet (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush), who followed with back-to-back service aces to end the game.
The Panthers closed out the match with a 25-23 victory in the fourth game. After the Dolphins scored five of the first seven points, Adelphi registered six straight points and 13 of the next 15 points for a 15-7 advantage. Le Moyne countered with four straight points to force an Adelphi timeout, but the Panthers responded with a 5-1 run to force a Le Moyne timeout. Out of the timeout, the Dolphins scored five of the next six points to cut their deficit to 21-17. After the Panthers pushed their lead to 24-17, the Dolphins rattled off six straight points to close within one point. However, DeStefano landed a kill to end the match.
McDermott, the conference's top hitter, hit at a .500-clip in registering a match high-tying 11 kills, while registering eight blocks. Senior outside hitter Bethany Fabian (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier) and junior outside hitter Madison Snow (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) each landed eight kills, while Fabien led the Dolphins defensively with 20 digs and Snow added 11 digs. Maisonet dished out 30 assists and posted 17 digs for her 10t double-double of the year.
DeStefano landed 11 kills, while adding 10 blocks to complete her double-double. Overholt finished with 11 kills, seven digs and four blocks, while Samantha Rico had 10 kills. Bianca Hernandez led the Adelphi defense with 22 digs, while Katie Bryson directed the offense with 38 assists.
Le Moyne (12-7, 3-4 NE-10), which has dropped five of its last eight matches, returns to action on Friday at Stonehill at 7:00 p.m.
