Volleyball vs. AIC - 10/5/12

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior outside hitter Bethany Fabian (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier) registered 14 kills to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball team to a 3-1 win over American International in Northeast-10 Conference action on Friday night at Ted Grant Court.

The Dolphins opened the match by taking the first game by a score of 25-21. After the Yellow Jackets scored two of the first three points, the Dolphins rattled off six of the next seven for a 7-3 lead. American International battled back to tie the score at eight-apiece, but Le Moyne countered with a 5-1 run of its own to regain the four-point edge. The teams then went back-and-forth, with neither team scoring more than two points in a row, before the Yellow Jackets closed within 22-21 on a kill by Britt Bryant. The Dolphins then got consecutive kills from sophomore middle hitter Kristen Willets (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) and a kill by senior outside hitter Allison Hebel (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) to put the game away.

Le Moyne doubled its lead in the match with a 25-23 victory in the second game. After the teams split the first 18 points of the game, the Dolphins landed three straight kills to take the lead for good. The teams then alternated points, resulting in a 20-16 Le Moyne lead. The Yellow Jackets followed with a 7-3 run to even the score at 23 and force a Le Moyne timeout. Out of the timeout, Willets landed a kill and senior middle hitter Morgan McDermott (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) blocked an AIC attack to end the game.

American International stayed alive in the match by registering a 25-18 win in the third game. The Yellow Jackets opened the game with the first three points and eight of the first 11 points. After the Dolphins closed within 10-7, American International posted four straight points around a Le Moyne timeout. Le Moyne used a 6-3 run to pull within 17-13, but the Yellow Jackets answered with six of the next seven points for their largest lead of the match. The Dolphins tallied four of the next five points, but then committed a service error to end the game.

The Dolphins closed out the match by rallying for a 25-17 victory in the fourth game. American International opened the game with seven of the first nine points to force a timeout. The Dolphins countered with eight of the next 11 points to pull within 11-10 and force an AIC timeout. Out of the timeout, the Yellow Jackets five of the first six points to regain their five-point lead. McDermott and junior outside hitter Madison Snow (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) then blocked an AIC attack to ignite a 7-0 run, which put the Dolphins in front 18-16. Caitlin Connelly landed a kill for the Yellow Jackets to end Le Moyne's run, but the Dolphins responded with the game's final seven points behind the serve of Snow.

Fabian added nine digs and five blocks to her team-high kill total. Willets was the only other Dolphin to register double-digit kills, posting 10, while adding a career-high seven blocks. McDermott landed nine kills, while hitting .538 to take over the conference lead in hitting percentage (.407). Snow led the Dolphins defensively with 14 digs, while adding eight kills. Hebel recorded 13 digs and nine kills, while sophomore setter Megan Maisonet (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) directed the offense with 37 assists, while completing her eighth double-double of the year with 12 digs.

Connelly led the Yellow Jackets with 17 kills, while adding eight digs. Bryant posted 11 kills, while Vanessa Ruiz led American International with 15 digs. Kervelle Redhead dished out 41 assists in the match.

Le Moyne (12-4, 3-1 NE-10), which has won three of its first four NE-10 games for the first time since the 2005 season, returns to action on Sunday at Southern Connecticut State at 12:00 p.m.
