VOLLEYBALL DROPS TWO MATCHES AT SEASON-OPENING CRIMSON HAWK INVITATIONAL

Indiana, Pa. – The Le Moyne College volleyball team opened the season on Friday with a pair of losses at the Crimson Hawk Invitational, hosted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Dolphins opened the season with a 3-0 loss to IUP in their first match and suffered a 3-2 loss to Cedarville in the second match.

The Crimson Hawks opened the first match with a 25-17 victory in the first game. After the teams split the first four points, IUP went on a 7-1 run to force a Le Moyne timeout. Following the timeout, the Dolphins responded with a 7-2 run to pull within a point. The Crimson Hawks regained control of the game with 11 of the next 14 points to take a 22-14 advantage. The teams alternated the game's final six points, capped by an Elizabeth Sova kill.

IUP doubled its lead in the match with another 25-17 win in the second game. After the Dolphins scored the first three points, IUP rattled off seven of the next eight points. Le Moyne countered with a 6-2 run to regain the lead. Following back-and-forth play that led to a 13-all tie, the Crimson Hawks posted five of the next six points to force a Le Moyne timeout. The Dolphins got the first point after the timeout, but IUP answered with four straight points for a 22-15 advantage. As she did in the first game, Sova sealed the win for IUP, this time with a service ace.

The Crimson Hawks closed out the match with a 25-12 victory in the third game. The teams went back-and-forth at the beginning of the game, resulting in a 9-9 tie. The Crimson Hawks took control of the game with a 9-1 run around a Le Moyne timeout. After the Dolphins scored consecutive points to get within 18-12, IUP tallied the final seven points of the game.

The Dolphins were led offensively by senior outside hitter Bethany Fabian (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier) and sophomore middle hitter Kristen Willets (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal), who each registered six kills. Fabian also led the defensive effort with a match-high 18 digs, while freshman Marissa Piccinini (Reno, Nev./Galena) recorded 16 digs. Sophomore setter Megan Maisonet (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) directed the off by handing out 19 assists.

Ericka Lentz led the Crimson Hawks with eight kills and 11 digs. Sarah Alman registered a double-double with 30 assists and 10 digs, while Joie Hrapla posted 16 digs and Kelly Barnes added 14 digs.


The Dolphins opened the match with Cedarville by winning the first game 25-22. After Le Moyne tallied the first five points, the Yellow Jackets rattled off 10 of the game's next 13 points for a two point edge. Following alternating points that resulted in a 15-13 Cedarville lead, the Dolphins scored five straight points behind the serve of Piccinini to regain the lead. The Yellow Jackets closed within a point on four occasions, but the Dolphins tallied four of the game's final six points to clinch the win.

Le Moyne doubled its lead by rallying for a 25-23 victory in the second game. After Cedarville scored eight of the first 12 points, the Dolphins countered with an 8-4 run of their own to knot the score at 12-apiece. The Yellow Jackets responded with seven of the next nine points to take a 19-14 advantage. Le Moyne started its comeback by scoring four straight points to force a Cedarville timeout. After committing an attack error, the Dolphins posted three consecutive points for a 21-10 advantage. Cedarville evened the score for the last time at 21-21, but Fabian and classmate Allison Hebel (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) landed back-to-back kills to regain the lead for the Dolphins. Willets ended the game by slamming down a pass from Maisonet.

The Yellow Jackets extended the match by taking the third game, 25-20. The Dolphins scored six of the first nine points in the game, but Cedarville responded with a 10-6 run to take the lead. The Yellow Jackets slowly pulled away for the win, with the Dolphins unable to record back-to-back points until falling behind 22-17. After Le Moyne got within 23-20, Cedarville registered consecutive kills to take the game.

Cedarville evened the match at two games apiece with a 25-22 win in the fourth game. After Cedarville jumped out to an 8-4 lead, the Dolphins scored five straight points and eight of the game's next nine points to take a 12-9 advantage. Following a Cedarville timeout, the Yellow Jackets tallied 10 of the next 14 points to reverse the game's three-point margin. Le Moyne answered back with three straight points to tie the score before adding three points in a five-point stretch to take a 22-21 lead. However, Cedarville closed the game with four straight points to claim the win.

The Yellow Jackets closed out their come-from-behind win with 15-11 victory in the decisive fifth game. After the Dolphins scored three of the first four points, Cedarville scored six of the next seven for a 7-4 advantage. Le Moyne closed within 10-9 and forced a Cedarville timeout, but the Yellow Jackets countered with three straight points and five of the game's last seven points for the win.

Hebel led four Dolphins with double-digit kills with 13, while adding 13 digs. Fabian also posted a double-double by contributing 11 kills and a team-best 24 digs. Willets and senior Danielle Fetsch (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) each registered 10 kills. Maisonet dished out 41 assists, while adding a career-high 21 digs. Piccinini recorded 20 digs, while senior Julianne Shelton (Central Square, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) had 14 digs.

Lori Inkrott and Stephanie Rogers each had 13 kills for the Yellow Jackets, while Inkrott added 15 digs. Tori Thompson and Amanda Bell also posted double-digit kill totals with 10 apiece. Heather Kirkpatrick had a match-high 34 digs, while Kara Yutzy added 24 and Maddie Anderson contributed 14 to go along with 27 assists.

Le Moyne (0-2) wraps up play at the Crimson Hawk Invitational on Saturday with a pair of matches. The Dolphins face Coker at 9:00 a.m. and Roberts Wesleyan at 4:00 p.m.
