MORANO LEADS WOMEN’S SOCCER TO SEASON-OPENING WIN AT WILMINGTON, 4-1
Newark, Del. – Two-time all-conference forward Christie Morano (Highland, N.Y./Highland) scored two goals and dished out an assist to lead the Le Moyne College women's soccer team to a 4-1 win over Wilmington University on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
Morano got the Dolphins on the scoreboard just 4:29 into the game as she blasted a shot into the upper corner of the goal off a deflected clear attempt by the Wilmington goalkeeper. With the tally, Morano moved into third place on the program's goals scored chart with her 35th career goal.
After back-and-forth play over the ensuing 28 and one-half minutes, sophomore forward Lindsey Bakal (Newark Valley, N.Y./Newark Valley) doubled Le Moyne's lead with a left-footed shot from 16 yards out into the left side of the goal after an errant touch by a Wilmington defender.
Le Moyne added to its lead with a pair of goals 3:22 apart in the opening minutes of the second half. Senior midfielder Gabriele Ariola (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) netted her 11th career goal after taking a pass from Morano and depositing her shot into the right side of the goal from 12 yards out on the left side at the 51:23 mark. Morano finished Le Moyne's scoring with 35:15 remaining after taking a long through ball from junior midfielder Kate Deasy (Pittsford, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) and beating the goalkeeper in a 1-on-1 situation.
Wilmington got on the scoreboard at the 76:30 mark as Chelsea Grace hooked in a corner kick.
Freshman goalkeeper Tori Corsaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) earned the win by turning away both shots she faced in 66:55 in between the pipes. Amanda Walters suffered the loss for the Wildcats after making two saves in six chances. The Dolphins registered a 14-11 advantage in shots, while taking six of the game's 10 corner kicks.
