WSOC: MORANO NAMED NORTHEAST-10 FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR, HARRISON
& FLETCHER EARN SECOND TEAM HONORS
South Easton, Mass. - Le Moyne College freshman forward
Christie Morano (Highland, N.Y./Highland) has been
named the 2009 Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer Freshman of
the Year, as voted on by the league's 16 head coaches and announced
by the conference office on Friday afternoon. Senior forward
Christina Harrison (Jamesville,
N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) and junior back Riane
Fletcher (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon) were each named to the
Second Team.
Morano, also named to the conference's Third Team and All-Rookie
team, is the second Le Moyne freshman to earn the conference's top
freshman honor. Helena Heppeler '04 picked up the award in 2000
after scoring seven goals and recording five assists for 19 points.
Morano led the Dolphins in goals scored with 11, while also adding
two assists for 24 total points. She finished the regular season
sixth in the conference in points and goals scored, tops among
freshmen in each category. The 11 goals and 24 points are the most
by a Dolphin freshman in 17 years and are the third-highest totals
in the program's history.
Harrison, honored by the conference for the third time in her
career after being named to the first team in 2006 and 2008, was a
starter in all 19 games played this season. Harrison tied Morano
for the team lead in points with 24 on nine goals and six assists.
The 24 points and six assists are tied for the sixth-highest total
in the conference, while her nine goals rank eighth. Over 67 career
games, Harrison tallied 34 goals and 16 assists for 84 total
points. Her 34 goals and 84 points rank third in program history,
while her 16 assists are tied for the fourth-best total on the
career charts.
Fletcher, recognized by the conference for the first time, started
all 18 games that she played this season along the backline. After
scoring 11 goals over her first two seasons as a forward, Fletcher
made the move to center back and solidified the defense that held
opponents to 1.70 goals per game.
Le Moyne (10-7-2, NE-10 6-7-2) finished its season with
double-digit wins for the first time since the 2000 season and for
only the sixth time in the program's 30-year history.
