WSOC: MERRIMACK HANDS LE MOYNE FIRST HOME LOSS OF SEASON, 3-1

Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder Rachel Farneti (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scored her first goal of the season but the Le Moyne College women’s soccer team fell to Merrimack College, 3-1, in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins dropped a home match for the first time this season.

Le Moyne threatened on the offensive end twice in the first half but couldn’t come away with a score. Just over 16 minutes in, freshman forward Christie Morano (Highland, N.Y./Highland) rocketed a shot that deflected off the far post. Senior back Courtney Paddock (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) followed in the game’s 35th minute with a corner kick that grazed the crossbar. The Warriors jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 8:11 remaining in the first half behind Gabrielle Gramprey’s eleventh goal of the campaign.

Merrimack doubled its lead 8:24 into the second half, when Jackie Vickers took a feed from Kara Hennigan and turned it into her second goal of the season. Le Moyne’s goal came ten minutes later, when Farneti sent in a corner kick from the left side. The Warriors tacked on an insurance goal in the game’s 79th minute. Gramprey lofted a pass to Jessie DeGraan, who headed the ball to the upper right corner.

Despite the loss, the Dolphins held a 19-9 advantage in shots and an 11-2 edge in corner kicks. Brittany Gustafson finished with seven saves for Merrimack while sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Stevens (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) collected a pair of saves for Le Moyne.

Le Moyne (9-5-2, NE-10 6-5-2) returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 21 for a non-conference match with Roberts Wesleyan at 3:00 p.m.
