WSOC: DOLPHINS FALL 1-0 ON EARLY UMASS LOWELL GOAL
Lowell, Mass. - Freshman Taylor Hartmann scored in the 17th minute
to lead UMass Lowell to a 1-0 win over the Le Moyne College women's
soccer team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action
at Cushing Field.
Hartmann netted her seventh goal of the season after taking a feed
from forward Brianne Bozzella. Bozzella lofted a crossing pass from
the right side of the field that was deflected by sophomore
goalkeeper Melissa Stevens (Camillus, N.Y./West
Genesee) to Hartmann, who knocked in the eventual
game-winner. The River Hawks kept the pressure on the Dolphins, but
Stevens was able to make five saves over the final 27 minutes of
the first half to send the game into intermission at 1-0.
In the second half, UMass Lowell rattled off 12 shots to Le Moyne's
7, but could not add to its lead. Stevens turned aside all six
shots on net in the final stanza. The Dolphins mounted a rally in
the final five minutes, but River Hawk goalkeeper Jamie Gillis made
three consecutive saves in a six-second span. Freshman forward
Christie Morano (Highland, N.Y./Highland) had a
pair of shots stopped by Gillis, while senior forward
Christina Harrison (Jamesville,
N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) had her initial shot saved before
sending the rebound wide of the goal. Gillis made her seventh and
final save with 1:54 to go on a shot by senior back
Courtney Paddock (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W.
Baker).
Stevens finished the contest with 11 saves. With the shutout,
Gillis posted a clean slate in 10 consecutive games and extends her
streak of shutout minutes to 1,032. The River Hawks edged Le Moyne,
20-13, in shots, while also recording a 5-3 edge in corner
kicks.
Le Moyne (8-4-2, NE-10 5-4-2), which remains in sixth place in the
