WSOC: DOLPHINS END REGULAR SEASON WITH 2-1 OT WIN OVER
STONEHILL
Easton, Mass. - A one-two scoring punch of juniors Megan O'Shea (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) and Christina Harrison (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) carried the Le Moyne College women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over Stonehill in Northeast-10 Conference play at Skyhawk Field. A Northeast-10 Conference Tournament berth for Le Moyne depends on the outcome of Tuesday's game between St. Anselm and Assumption.
In their final regular season game of the campaign, the Dolphins jumped ahead early when O'Shea sent home a penalty kick in the tenth minute. After a Stonehill defender made an initial sliding save in front of the goal, O'Shea was fouled in pursuit of the bouncing ball. Her penalty strike was her seventh goal of the season.
The Skyhawks evened the score at the 33:01 mark when Kelsey Mahoney sent home a chip shot from Kirstie St. Martin. The two teams played scoreless soccer in the second half and senior goalkeeper Amanda Abbatiello (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) kept Le Moyne in the game with a trio of second-half saves.
Stonehill tested the Dolphins 40 seconds into overtime when St. Martin delivered a header to the lower left corner of the net, but Abbatiello responded with a diving stab, her tenth save of the afternoon. Harrison netted the game-winner on a header four minutes later. Freshman Rachel Farneti (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) took a free kick from 25 yards out and lofted a ball in front of the goal. Harrison deposited the ball in the upper right corner for her team-best 13th goal of the season.
Abbatiello's 10 saves were a season-high and the most since her sophomore season. Harrison's 13 goals on the season are the most for a women's soccer player since 1995.
The Dolphins (9-6-2, NE-10 6-6-2) will await the outcome of Tuesday's Northeast-10 Conference game between St. Anselm and Assumption. A St. Anselm win eliminates Le Moyne from playoff contention, while a St. Anselm loss or tie gives the Dolphins the No. 8 seed in the conference tournament.
