WSOC: DOLPHINS EDGED BY SAINT ROSE, 1-0, IN HOME FINALE
Syracuse, N.Y. - Forward Jazmine Farrell scored off a rebound to lead Saint Rose to a 1-0 win over the Le Moyne College women's soccer team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex.
Following a first half in which the Golden Knights controlled a majority of the action in their offensive half of the field, the two squads went into the intermission knotted at zero. The Golden Knights rattled off 11 shots in the period, while the Dolphins registered two.
Just under four and one-half minutes into the second half, junior forward Megan O'Shea (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) had a chance to get the Dolphins on the scoreboard, but her shot was cleared out of bounds by Saint Rose before it could cross into the goal.
Following a cross from the right side of the field that was turned away by the Le Moyne defense, midfielder Brittany Godin hit the left post with a shot from 12 yards out. Farrell one-touched the rebound into the back of the net from just outside the mouth of the goal for her team-leading sixth goal of the season with 33 minutes remaining in the contest.
Le Moyne had a chance to tie the score at one apiece with less than two minutes left in the match, but freshman midfielder Rachel Farneti's (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) shot hit off the top right corner of the goalpost.
Saint Rose held a 23-11 advantage in shots in the contest, including 12-9 in the second half, while also registering an 11-7 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Amanda Abbatiello (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) posted five saves in net in her final career regular-season contest, while Shannon Murphy recorded five saves for the Golden Knights.
Prior to the contest, Le Moyne's eight-member senior class was honored for their contributions to the program. Abbatiello, Leah Mazella (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger), Meg Turley (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), Jocelyn Jankowski (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus), Sara Poreda (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Catholic), Jenna Milonovich (Ft. Johnson, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth), Justine Ravas (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and Laura Duening (Chittenango, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) all played their final regular-season contest at home.
