LE MOYNE TRIPPED BY UMASS LOWELL, 2-0, IN NE-10 ACTION

Lowell, Mass. – The Le Moyne College women’s soccer team fell to UMass Lowell, 2-0, in Northeast-10 Conference action at Cushing Field. Senior Amanda Abbatiello (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) finished with seven saves in goal for the Dolphins. The loss marked the first time during the 2008 campaign that Le Moyne was held scoreless.

The River Hawks scored early, as sophomore Brianne Bozzella converted a corner kick from the left side five minutes into the game. Le Moyne nearly tied the game three minutes after the halftime break but a shot by junior Christina Harrison (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) sailed just over the crossbar. UMass Lowell doubled their lead in the 57th minute when sophomore Ella Merullo bent a ball in the top right corner of the goal.

Harrison had another near-score midway through the second half on a free kick from sophomore Jill Tollman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham). But her header hit the crossbar and the ball was cleared by the River Hawks’ defense.

For UMass Lowell (3-2-2, NE-10 2-1-2), junior Jamie Gillis notched her second straight shutout by stopping five Dolphin shots. Abbatiello’s seven-save performance for Le Moyne was one short of her season-high.

The Dolphins (4-2-1, NE-10 1-2-1) travel to New Haven, Conn. to face Southern Connecticut State in another Northeast-10 Conference road battle on Tuesday. The match is set for 7 p.m.
