ABBATIELLO STELLAR IN GOAL BUT MERRIMACK CLIPS LE MOYNE, 2-0

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women’s soccer team fell to Merrimack, 2-0, at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins slip to 7-6 overall and 4-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference while the Warriors move to 8-1-4 on the year with a 5-1-3 record in conference play. Le Moyne held an advantage in the shots category, 22-14, but Merrimack capitalized on two corner kick opportunities to secure the road win.

With 33:15 remaining in the first half, the Warriors turned a corner kick situation into the game’s first goal. Ashley Alnwick headed a Heather Macedo pass into the back of the net for her first goal of the season. As the game drew to a close, Macedo and Alnwick connected for a second score. With 5:55 remaining, Alnwick registered her second tally via a header. Merrimack held a 10-7 advantage in corner kicks for the match.

The Dolphins tested Merrimack goalkeeper Shannon Rowan with a barrage of 22 shots. Jacki Rossi, Megan O’Shea and Christina Harrison combined for 14 shots. Rowan finished with seven saves for the match.

For her part, Le Moyne goalkeeper Amanda Abbatiello stopped seven shots, using numerous diving attempts to calm Merrimack offensive rallies.

Le Moyne returns to action tomorrow as the Dolphins host Kean University in a non-conference match at noon.
