November 30, 2006LE MOYNE WOMEN'S SOCCER AND MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY EARN INAUGURAL SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS FROM NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE
SOUTH EASTON, Mass.
- The Le Moyne College women's soccer and men's
cross country teams have been named recipients of the Northeast-10
Conference Sportsmanship Awards. The awards program, which honors
one team from each of the league's championship sports that has
best exemplified the spirit of sportsmanship and generally
conducted themselves with a high degree of integrity, character and
class, is in its inaugural year. The awards were decided upon by a
vote of each the league teams head coach, team captain and Student
Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative.
Le Moyne College and Saint Anselm College each received awards in two fall sports. Le Moyne's award-winning teams are each coached by a Le Moyne College graduate.
Gerry Mahon '76, the women's cross country coach since 1985, is in his 11th season as the men's cross country coach.
"It's a nice honor for our team. They represent the Le Moyne College community well and live by the mission of the college," Mahon '76 said. "Our runners are like that in their daily lives and it's great that they are being recognized for it."
In 2000, Jimmy Riverso '02 coached the women's soccer team to an 8-8-1 mark and the program's first postseason appearance since 2000.
"I'm happy our team has been recognized for its integrity on and off the field," Riverso '02 said. "We play hard, we play to win, but we want to go about it the right way."
In June, one of the 15 league institutions will receive the
"Northeast-10 Institution of the Year Sportsmanship Award" by the
conference Senior Women Administrator (SWA) council. In addition,
Webster Bank will make a donation annually to the institutional
award winner's local Boy's & Girl's Club in the name of the
school.
