WOMEN’S LACROSSE SELECTED FIRST IN NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE PRESEASON POLL
South Easton, Mass. – The Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team has been selected to repeat as Northeast-10 Conference regular season champions, as voted upon by the league's 13 head coaches in the annual preseason poll and announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Le Moyne, which won the regular season title last year after posting a 12-0 record, was tabbed first on five of the 13 ballots and earned 137 total points to claim the top spot in the poll. Adelphi, which defeated the Dolphins in the Northeast-10 championship game, also received five first-place votes, while totaling 133 points to place second. Stonehill College, an NE-10 semifinalist last year, garnered the final three first-place votes and 124 points to land third in the poll. New Haven claimed the fourth spot with 110 points, while Bentley ranked fifth with 103 points and Merrimack rounded out the expected playoff field with 86 points.
Saint Anselm tallied 76 points to place seventh, while crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire landed eighth with 65 points. Assumption earned ninth place for the second straight year with 61 points, while Franklin Pierce ranked 10th for the second consecutive year with 40 points. Saint Michael's (37 points), American International (27) and Southern Connecticut State (15) were selected to round out the final three spots in the poll.
The Dolphins return 17 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's 16-3 squad that advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the second straight year. The Dolphins return nine of their top 10 scorers from last year's team that averaged just under 15 goals per game. Senior All-American attacker Brenna Bauer (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) registered 76 points on 56 goals (the 16th-best total in the nation) and 20 assists to finish second on the team in all three categories. Junior all-conference attacker Kathleen Conese (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) finished her sophomore campaign third on the team in goals scored with 43, fourth in points with 54 and sixth in assists with 11. Le Moyne, which finished 2012 with the nation's stingiest defense, allowing just 6.74 goals per game, returns a pair of standout defenders in senior All-American Molly Maroney (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) and junior All-Region honoree Megan Collins (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker). Maroney ranked third on the team in caused turnovers with 12, while ranking in a tie for sixth on the team with 24 ground balls. Collins led the Dolphins with 24 caused turnovers and tied for second on the team in ground balls with 30.
Le Moyne opens the 2013 season on Saturday, February 23 against Roberts Wesleyan at 11:00 a.m. The six-team conference championship begins on Wednesday, May 1 with first round action.
