WLAX: VERMONT ENDS LE MOYNE'S TWO-GAME WIN STREAK WITH 10-8
VICTORY
Syracuse, N.Y. - Allison Pfohl scored three goals to lead Vermont
to a 10-8 win over Le Moyne College in non-conference women's
lacrosse action at Henninger High School on Sunday afternoon.
Le Moyne opened the game's scoring with three goals in the opening
7:33 of the contest.
Sophomore Mia Valletta (Niskayuna,
N.Y./Niskayuna) got the scoring started with an unassisted
tally just 21 seconds into the game. The Dolphins added two more
goals over a span of 1:13 as sophomore Rebekah Elmer
(Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) converted on a free-position
shot and junior Jackie Lundblad (Marietta,
N.Y./Marcellus) finished off a feed from Elmer.
Following a Catamount timeout at the 22:27 mark, Vermont rattled
off six consecutive goals over a span of seven minutes. Pfohl
ignited the run with an unassisted tally before her team scored
five times in four minutes. Lindsay Hegarty and Kristen Millar each
posted a goal and an assist in the stretch, while Samantha Stern
scored once and Alison Haigh and Pfohl each scored off
free-position shots.
Sophomore Nerissa Barzee (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W.
Baker) pulled the Dolphins to within 6-5 at halftime with
goals at the 7:02 and 1:04 marks. Classmate Leah Lazarz
(Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) assisted on the second of
Barzee's goals.
The Catamounts registered four goals over the opening 15:29 of the
second half to put the game away. Haigh opened the half with an
unassisted goal with 25:21 remaining in the second game. Sara
Buxton followed with back-to-back goals off feeds from Stern and
Millar before Pfohl capped her team's scoring with an unassisted
marker.
The Dolphins recorded three consecutive goals in the final 7:30,
but could pull no closer than 10-8. Freshman Stephanie
Dussing (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) scored from six
yards out to begin the rally. Valletta scored off a free-position
shot with 2:14 remaining and Elmer fed a cutting Barzee for a goal
with 56 seconds left, but the Catamounts won the ensuing draw
control to run out the clock.
Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Fucillo (Camillus, N.Y./West
Genesee) posted 12 saves between the pipes, including
seven in the second half, in the setback. Laura Barber earned the
win for Vermont, yielding four goals, while posting one save in the
opening 22:58 of the contest. Olivia Hatfield stopped 10 shots,
while allowing four goals over the final 37:02.
