DOLPHINS USE SECOND-HALF SURGE TO RALLY PAST PIONEERS,
9-7
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Le Moyne College women’s
lacrosse team used a second-half rally that included six
consecutive scores to knock off Sacred Heart University, 9-7.
Whitney Vecchio continued her dominance on the offensive end of the
field for the Dolphins (3-3), scoring three goals and handing out a
pair of assists. The Pioneers (2-5) received four goals from Katie
Salamone.
The Dolphins escaped with a victory despite trailing for the
majority of the game. Vecchio and Molly Yaman netted first-half
goals to bring Le Moyne to within two, trailing 4-2, at the
halftime break. Sacred Heart scored a trio of goals on
free-position shots to open up a 7-3 second-half lead but Le Moyne
responded with an offensive flurry.
Six goals in 14 minutes capped the Dolphins’ comeback.
Vecchio netted consecutive goals before Mia Valletta evened the
score with back-to-back tallies. Le Moyne saw its first lead of the
game at the 1:43 mark of the second half when Maura Kenville turned
a pass from Vecchio into her second goal of the season. Rebekah
Elmer added an insurance goal, her ninth of the season, with 10
seconds remaining.
Between the pipes, Samantha Falcone stopped three shots in
first-half action for the Dolphins. Alex Dwyer collected six saves
in the second half to earn the victory.
Vecchio netted a hat trick and Valletta finished with two goals for
Le Moyne. Yaman, Kenville, Elmer and Michelle Phillips also found
the back of the net. Vecchio, Elmer, Leah Mazella and Michelle
Lissner dished out assists.
The Dolphins travel to Vermont for a Sunday match-up scheduled for
noon.
