LE MOYNE EARNS NCAA TOURNAMENT BERTH WITH 19-12 DEFEAT OF MONMOUTH; KEEGAN BECOMES DOLPHINS ALL-TIME GOAL SCORER.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team secured a berth into the NCAA Tournament on Saturday with a 19-12 defeat of Monmouth. Amanda Keegan (Marcellus, NY / Marcellus) led the attack with six goals and five assists. The tournament bracket will be announced on Monday where the Dolphins will learn of their opening round opponent. This will be the third appearance Le Moyne will make the NCAA Tournament and first since 2003.
Monmouth jumped in front early on goals from Colleen Burg and Katie Degen and outscored the Dolphins 4-2 through the first fifteen minutes of the half. Le Moyne would score three unanswered goals to take a 5-4 lead on Keegan's second goal of the afternoon. Monmouth would counter with three unanswered goals to jump back in front 7-5. Le Moyne would end the half in a flurry scoring four goals in the final 2:22 to take a 9-7 advantage into the half.
The Dolphins would tally the first goal of the second half on one
of Lisa McCarthy's (Syracuse, N.Y. /West Genesee)
three goals on the day. Monmouth would score with 18:06
remaining on a goal from Kaitlyn Robinson to pull within one goal.
That would be as close as they would get as the Dolphins would
outscore Monmouth 8-2 over the final 17 minutes to secure the
victory.
Kylie Rosette (Watertown, N.Y. /General Brown scored five goals and assisted on another to tally six points. Whitney Vecchio (Watertown, N.Y. /General Brown) and Lisa McCarthy (Syracuse, N.Y. /West Genesee) each scored three goals each with Emily Donnells (Penn Yan, N.Y. /Penn Yan) and McKenzie Gray (Baldwinsville, N.Y. /Baldwinsville) notching one goal to round out the Dolphin attack.
Amanda Keegan's six goals and five assists on the day places her at the top of the Le Moyne career record books. With six goals, she becomes the all-time leader in goals scored, surpassing Amanda Daniels' '03 mark of 166. Keegan's assists give her a total of 67 and the program lead in that category. Whitney Vecchio is currently second in program history with 64 assists.
Le Moyne will learn who they will face in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Monday, May 7th as the brackets are released on www.ncaasports.com. The Dolphins will return to action on Sunday, May 13th in the first round with a time and location to be determined.
