WOMEN’S BASKETBALL REGISTERS 70-59 WIN OVER LINCOLN UNIVERSITY
Lincoln University, Pa. – Junior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) scored 17 points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 70-59 win over Lincoln University on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.
Greer, who tallied 10 of her points in the first half, pulled down a game-best eight rebounds and dished out three assists. Junior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) recorded 12 points, eight of which came in the opening 4:16 of the game. Sophomore forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) posted 11 points and seven rebounds.
Lisa Saunders led the Lady Lions with 14 points, while adding four rebounds. Cynthia Johnson posted 13 points, six steals, five assists and three rebounds. Zephrah Pam (Corcoran) came off the bench to record nine points and seven rebounds.
After Lincoln scored the first five points of the game, the Dolphins tallied 10 of the next 12 points over a span of 2:35. Marple buried a pair of three-pointers around a jump shot and a Greer lay-up.
Following a free throw by Brown gave the Dolphins a 15-14 edge with 13:20 left in the half, the Lady Lions scored six straight points for their largest lead of the game. Courtney Smith made a three-pointer, Pam converted a foul shot and then Johnson made a jumper with 11:22 remaining.
After the teams traded points over the next 7:23, resulting in a 31-27 Lincoln advantage, the Dolphins closed out the half with a 13-1 run to take a 40-32 lead into halftime. Senior guard Maddy McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) started the run with a jumper, Greer followed with a conventional three-point play and another free throw, graduate student guard Kayla Stroman (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/Niagara) nailed a three-pointer and junior forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) ended the spurt with a lay-up and a jumper.
Following a lay-up by Brown to open the second half, the Lady Lions recorded 11 of the next 13 points to pull within 44-43 with 15:11 remaining. Mieana Gaines ignited the run with a lay-up and later added another lay-up, Saunders hit a three-pointer and a jumper on consecutive possessions and Johnson capped the streak with a lay-up.
The Dolphins responded with five straight points and 16 of the next 17 to extend their lead to a game-best 16 points with 8:17 to play. Junior guard Maddie Hahesy (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led Le Moyne in the stretch with seven points, Greer had five and McKnight and Pucello each made lay-ups.
Lincoln answered with 11 consecutive points over the next 4:03 to trim its deficit to five with 4:14 left. Saunders nailed a pair of three-pointers in the jaunt, while Johnson had four points and Gaines made a free throw.
Stroman converted a pair of free throws and Marple followed by making a jumper to regain control for the Dolphins. Le Moyne made six of eight free throw attempts over the final 2:40 to put the game away.
Le Moyne (5-1), which has won five of its first six games for the first time since the 1997-98 season, opens the home portion of its Northeast-10 Conference schedule on Wednesday against American International College at 5:00 p.m.
