SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE PULLS AWAY FOR 72-57 WIN OVER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Syracuse, N.Y. – Camille Fantini scored 19 points to lead Southern Connecticut State University to a 72-57 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Freshman forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) led the Dolphins with 14 points, 11 of which came after halftime, and nine rebounds (five offensive). Sophomore forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) registered 11 points (8 in the second half), five rebounds and three steals.

Fantini registered nine of her game-high point total in the final 9:28 of the game, while adding nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jackie Beathea recorded 18 points, 11 of which came in the second half, seven rebounds (six offensive), two blocks and two steals. Katie Stopera scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Moni Smith-Ocran had eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Following a free throw by Brown that gave the Dolphins a 4-3 lead with 16:24 left in the first half, the Owls scored nine points in 60 seconds to take a 12-4 advantage. Beathea had seven of the points, while Fantini converted a fast-break lay-up.

The Dolphins answered with six consecutive points to pull within two, but the Owls countered with a 17-6 run to take their largest lead of the half with 4:24 remaining. Fantini had eight of the points, Amani Lightbourne recorded seven points and Smith-Ocran made a lay-up, while the Dolphins got four points from sophomore guard Alex Marple (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro).

The Dolphins got baskets from Brown and freshman forward Lauren Price (Humble, Texas/Atascocita) before Stopera ended the half's scoring with a free throw to deliver the 30-20 halftime score.

After Beathea scored the first basket of the second half, the Dolphins ran off 12 of the next 16 points to pull within four with 17:29 remaining. Senior guard Torie Lee (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) started the run with a three-pointer, Brown followed with a jumper and a free throw, sophomore guard Maddie Hahesy (Erie, Pa./McDowell) then made a three-pointer and Pucello capped the run with a three-pointer.

Following a traditional three-point play by Pucello with 16:23 left, the Owls scored six straight points to regain their 10-point lead. Stopera and Danielle Powell made baskets before Lightbourne converted two free throws.

After each team scored four points over the next four minutes, the Dolphins scored seven straight points over 1:50 to pull within 49-46 with 9:42 remaining. Marple made two free throws, junior guard Maddy McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) made a lay-up and then Brown recorded a conventional three-point play.

Fantini answered with a three-pointer to ignite a 13-4 run over the next 4:18. Mariah Hankton followed with a jumper, Fantini hit another three-pointer, Stopera nailed a three-pointer to beat the shot clock and then Smith-Ocran converted a lay-up with 5:10 to play.

The Dolphins closed within nine with 3:53 left, but Fantini buried another three-pointer as the Owls scored 10 of the last 14 points to put the game away. Beathea ended the game's scoring with a put-back lay-up with six seconds left.

Le Moyne (5-19, 3-17 NE-10) visits Adelphi University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. for its final road game of the season.
