WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DOWNED ON THE ROAD BY NEW HAVEN
West Haven, Conn. – Anh-Dao Tran scored 23 points to lead the University of New Haven to a 95-52 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Charger Gymnasium.
Tran registered 18 of her game-high point total in the opening half as the Chargers jumped out to a 46-19 lead. Aquillin Hayes flirted with a triple-double, recording 12 points, 21 rebounds and eight blocked shots. Bria Moore tallied 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a game-best four assists as one of seven Chargers to hand out at least two assists.
Sophomore forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) led the Dolphins with 16 points, 13 of which came in the second half. Freshman forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) posted 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
After the Dolphins scored five of the game's first eight points, New Haven rattled off 13 straight points over a span of 2:07. Tran had five of the points, while Moore and Nikita Reddy each made three-pointers and Hayes had a tip-in.
Following three Le Moyne points, the Chargers posted another 13-0 run to take a 29-8 lead with 9:54 left in the first half. Briana Bradford started the run with a traditional three-point play, Tran followed with nine straight points and then Ashley LeBlanc made a free throw.
The teams then traded points over the next five minutes, resulting in a 35-16 New Haven lead with 4:46 to play. After Brown made a free throw, the Chargers scored seven straight points to push their lead to 26. LeBlanc had a pair of lay-ups around a three-point play by Moore. Hayes made a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left in the half to deliver the halftime score.
New Haven scored 10 of the first 13 points in the second half to extend its lead to 56-22 with 17:46 to play. Rykema Stone bookended the spurt with lay-ups.
The Dolphins countered with an 11-5 run to trim their deficit to 61-33 with 13:11 remaining. Four Dolphins accounted for the points, with Brown scoring the final four points in the span around a jumper by Hayes.
The Chargers answered with a 23-5 run over a span of 7:25 to take their largest lead of the game. Seven different players scored in the streak for the Chargers, led by seven points from Ayana Duncanson.
Le Moyne posted 10 of the next 14 points over a span of 2:15. Pucello made two three-pointers around two lay-ups by senior guard Torie Lee (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius).
Reddy made a three-pointer from the left wing with 22 seconds left to set the final margin.
Le Moyne (5-18, 3-16 NE-10) returns home to face Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Dolphins will wear special pink uniforms to raise awareness for breast cancer research.
