Women's Basketball vs. Assumption

Syracuse, N.Y. – The backcourt duo of Katy Howard and Gabrielle Gibson combined for 35 points to lead Assumption College to a 67-50 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.

Howard registered a game-high 18 points, including 10 in the second half, while dishing out five assists and grabbing four rebounds. Gibson scored 17 points, handed out four assists and recorded three steals.

Freshman guard/forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) led the Dolphins with 13 points, including 11 in the second half, while grabbing a team high-tying seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Alex Marple (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) tallied 11 points off the bench, including nine after halftime.

The Greyhounds, who are receiving votes in the USA Today Sports Division II National Poll, opened the game with the first nine points. Howard accounted for the first five on a three-pointer and a jumper.

Le Moyne closed within four points with a 6-1 run, but could not get any closer. Junior guard Maddy McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) got the Dolphins on the scoreboard with a three-pointer at the 14:26 mark.

After Gibson nailed a three-pointer to put the Greyhounds up 20-11 with 7:07 left, senior guard Torie Lee (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and sophomore forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) made lay-ups to pull the Dolphins within five with 5:32 left in the half.

Assumption (15-6, 12-5 NE-10) countered with 10 points in a span of 2:50 to take a 15-point lead. Shannon Ray and Gibson each hit three-pointers in the spurt. McKnight and Marple made lay-ups, while Assumption's Caitlin Ackerman made a free throw to make the score 31-19 at the intermission.

The Greyhounds scored the first six points of the second half and held at least a 13-point lead the duration of the stanza. Ray gave her team its largest lead of the game, 19 points, with a three-pointer with 15:46 remaining.

Le Moyne responded with an 8-2 run over the next four minutes to pull within 45-32 with 12:52 left. Four Dolphins scored in the span, including a traditional three-point play from Marple.

Assumption's lead bounced between 13 and 17 points over the next 10 and one-half minutes. After Marple made the score 61-48 with a lay-up with 2:11 left, the Greyhounds scored six straight points on a free throw by Ray, a three-pointer by Gibson and a jumper by Howard to complete their scoring. Lee then made a free throw with 22 seconds left to end the game's scoring.

Le Moyne (5-16, 3-14 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday against American International at 5:30 p.m.
