SAINT MICHAEL’S PULLS AWAY FROM WOMEN’S BASKETBALL IN FINAL MINUTES FOR 62-55 WIN

Syracuse, N.Y. – Megan Olsen scored 18 points to lead Saint Michael's College to a 62-55 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Sophomore forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) led the Dolphins with 13 points, all of which came in the second half. Freshman guard/forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) recorded 10 points, a team-high six rebounds and posted four steals.

Olsen pulled down seven rebounds, dished out three assists and had three steals to go along with her game-high point total. Nicole Adach registered 12 points and four rebounds. Makenzie Burud grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

After Brown opened the game's scoring with a jumper 26 seconds into the contest, the Purple Knights scored eight straight points and 15 of the next 19 points. Adach had five of the 15 points, while Alexa Long added four points.

The Dolphins responded with a 13-3 run over a span of 7:43 to take the lead. Five players scored in the streak, led by four points from junior guard Maddy McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) and capped by a three-pointer from sophomore guard Maddie Hahesy (Erie, Pa./McDowell) with 6:28 remaining.

Saint Michael's (8-11, 6-9 NE-10) countered with six straight points and 15 of the last 17 points of the half over the final 5:29. Cara Deroy (7) and Olsen (6) combined for the first 13 points, while Adach made a lay-up to give the Purple Knights a 33-21 lead at the intermission.

Le Moyne opened the second half with the first five points to cut its deficit to seven. Brown started the scoring with a jumper and sophomore forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) followed with a three-pointer in transition.

After the teams split the game's next 10 points, Megan Gaudreau nailed a pair of three-pointers from the left wing to give the Purple Knights their largest lead of the game (44-31) with 13:12.

Following four points from each team over the next one and one-half minutes, the Dolphins rattled off 14 consecutive points over a span of four minutes and 20 seconds. Hahesy started the run with a pair of free throws and Pucello followed with eight straight points in 1:26 on a three-pointer, two free throws and a traditional three-point play. Off a steal by Hahesy, Brown pulled the Dolphins within a point with a fast-break lay-up. Brown followed with a fast-break jumper off a pass from Hahesy to give Le Moyne the lead with 7:40 remaining.

Saint Michael's regained the lead on a three-point play by Long, but senior guard Torie Lee (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) answered with a lay-up 12 seconds later to knot the score at 51.

On the Purple Knights' next possession, Adach buried a three-pointer to give Saint Michael's the lead for good. Olsen made four free throws, Burud converted two foul shots and Long made a lay-up as the Purple Knights extended their lead to nine points. Lee ended the game's scoring by making a lay-up with 40 seconds left to snap a drought of 5:30 without a field goal.

Le Moyne (5-14, 3-12 NE-10), which has dropped five straight home games after winning three of its first four home contests, returns to action on Wednesday at The College of Saint Rose at 5:30 p.m. The game will mark the 11th contest in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions, which Saint Rose currently leads, 5.5-3.5.
