SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT USES SECOND-HALF RUN TO PULL AWAY FOR 69-52 WIN OVER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

New Haven, Conn. – Jackie Beathea registered a double-double to lead Southern Connecticut State University to a 69-52 victory over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Moore Field House.

Sophomore guard Alex Marple (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) led the Dolphins in the contest with 15 points.

Beathea, the Northeast-10 rookie of the week two of the last three weeks, scored 13 points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds. Camille Fantini led all players in the game with 17 points, while dishing out seven assists. Katie Stopera was the third Owl in double-digits with 10 points.

The Dolphins opened the game with the first seven points over the beginning 1:53. Marple started the scoring with a jumper, sophomore forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) followed with a three-pointer from the left wing and then senior guard Torie Lee (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) made a pair of free throws.

Southern Connecticut State answered with nine of the next 11 points to tie the score at nine with 14:47 remaining in the half. Beathea made a lay-up, Fantini made a lay-up and a three-pointer and then Mariah Hankton evened the score with a jumper.

The teams then split the next 28 points over a span of 8:29. Marple scored seven of Le Moyne's 14 points, while sophomore guard Maddie Hahesy (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added five points and freshman forward Lauren Price (Humble, Texas/Atascocita) made two free throws. Six different Owls accounted for their 14 points, with Hankton netting four of them.

After two scoreless possessions by each team, the teams traded 5-0 runs. Fantini nailed a three-pointer and then fed Nicole Grossbard for a fast-break lay-up to put Southern Connecticut up 28-23, while Greer made a free throw, freshman forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) followed with a fast-break pull-up jumper and then Price knotted the score with a jumper with 2:37 remaining in the half.

The Owls closed out the half with the final four points to take a 32-28 lead at the intermission. Beathea gave her team the lead with a lay-up with 2:10 left, while Stopera made two free throws with 1:05 remaining.

Following seven points by each team over the opening 3:08 of the second half, Beathea scored seven straight points in a span of 2:19 to put the Owls up 11 with 14:33 remaining in the game.

The Dolphins answered with a 7-0 run to get within 46-42 with 12:03 left in the contest. Marple made two free throws, Price followed with a pair from the charity stripe and then Hahesy nailed her second three-pointer of the game.

After freshman guard Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North) made two free throws with 9:36 left to make the score 49-44, the Owls tallied 16 of the next 17 points over a stretch of 4:15 for a 20 point lead. Stopera and Moni Smith-Ocran posted four points each in the run, while Hankton and Fantini made three-pointers and Danielle Powell capped the streak with a jumper off a feed from Fantini.

Le Moyne closed out the game with seven of the final 11 points over the last 4:59 to deliver the final score. Junior guard Raven Short (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) made a pair of baskets, while junior guard Ashley Prischak (Erie, Pa./Villa Marie Academy) made two free throws and sophomore forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) converted one foul shot.

Le Moyne (2-5, 1-4 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday against Adelphi University at 1:00 p.m.
