WOMEN’S BASKETBALL EDGED BY AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL, 57-50
Springfield, Mass. – Sydney Tepley registered a double-double to lead American International to a 57-50 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Butova Gymnasium.
Freshman forward Lauren Price (Humble, Texas/Atascocita) led the Dolphins in scoring with a career-high 11 points off the bench. Sophomore forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) recorded 10 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Tepley recorded a game-high 13 points and pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds. Alyssa Roach and Briana Bishop each tallied 11 points, while Roach added five rebounds and a game-high five assists.
After junior guard Maddy McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) made a jumper at the 16:44 mark to get the Dolphins within 4-2, the Yellow Jackets rattled off nine straight points over the next 2:41. Five different players accounted for the nine points.
The Dolphins countered with an 11-6 spurt to pull within six points with 7:19 left in the half. Freshman forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) tallied four of the points, while junior Ashley Prischak (Erie, Pa./Villa Marie Academy) nailed a three-pointer to cap the run and make the score 19-13.
After Krista Ferrentino and Greer traded free throws, Bishop nailed a pair of three-pointers to give the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of the game with 1:32 remaining in the half. Price made a lay-up with 40 seconds left to get the Dolphins within 10 at the intermission.
Le Moyne opened the second half with 11 of the first 12 points to knot the score at 27-apiece with 15:46 remaining in the game. Greer made a jumper and a three-pointer, Price registered a conventional three-point play and then senior guard Torie Lee (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) buried a three-pointer to tie the score and force an American International timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Yellow Jackets scored 10 straight points to regain control of the game. Ebony Easter made a lay-up, Roach hit a free throw, Tepley converted a lay-up, Roach drilled a three-pointer and then Bishop made a lay-up to force a Le Moyne timeout.
The Dolphins responded with a 7-2 run to cut their deficit in half with 8:30 remaining, but the Yellow Jackets answered with seven straight points to push their lead back to double digits. In Le Moyne's spurt, freshman guard Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North) nailed a three-pointer and Greer and classmate Alex Marple (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) followed with jumpers. In AIC's answer, Bishop and Sarah Noble made three-pointers around a free throw by Easter.
After Price recorded back-to-back baskets to pull the Dolphins within eight with 5:54 left, American International's lead bounced between seven and nine points the remainder of the game.
Le Moyne (2-3, 1-2 NE-10), which lost for the first time this season when scoring at least 50 points, returns to action on Saturday against New Haven at 1:00 p.m.
