WBB: DOLPHINS FALL, 58-38, TO SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE IN NE-10
PLAYOFFS
Syracuse, N.Y. - Julia Houghtaling scored 16 points and grabbed 13
rebounds to lead ninth-seeded Southern New Hampshire to a 58-38 win
over the eighth-seeded Le Moyne College women's basketball team in
the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference tournament on
Sunday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.
Following a seven point, four rebound performance in the first
half, Houghtaling registered nine points and nine rebounds in the
second half. Alyssa Whitney joined Houghtaling in double figures
with 14 points, including 10 after halftime. Senior forward
Vanessa Holden (Suffern, N.Y./Immaculate Heart
(N.J.)) led the Dolphins with 12 points and grabbed seven
rebounds, including the 600th of her career. Second Team
All-Conference selection Courtney Coryea (Mooers Forks,
N.Y./Northeast Clinton) tallied 10 points and a team-high
nine rebounds.
Holden opened the second half with a layup to knot the game at 24
apiece and following a jumper by Ashara Carrington, she hit a
three-pointer from the right corner to give the Dolphins their
first lead since the opening half-minute of the game. The Penman
answered back with a layup by Whitney and a three-pointer by
Stephanie Houghton to regain a four-point lead.
Following a timeout at the 13:13 mark by the Penman after sophomore
guard Danielle Felice (Adams, N.Y./South
Jefferson) drilled a three-pointer from the left wing,
Southern New Hampshire used a 15-2 spurt, including 10 points in a
row, to take control of the game. Houghtaling tallied six in the
run, while Whitney chipped in with four. Holden ended the 10-0 run
with a jumper, but the Penman responded with a 12-2 streak to push
out to a game-high 22-point lead. Sophomore guard Ashley
McFarlan (Kennesaw, Ga./St. John the Baptist) closed out
the game's scoring with a layup to deliver the final scoring
margin.
After a game-opening layup by junior guard Siobhan Shields
(Mason, N.H./St. Bernard's Central Catholic), the Penman
rattled off seven consecutive points, including a pair of layups by
Whitney. Following a pair of foul shots by Coryea, Southern New
Hampshire used a 10-2 spurt to push out to a 17-6 lead, its largest
of the half. Houghtaling and Megan Shay each hit three-pointers in
the stretch.
The Dolphins answered back with a 16-7 run of their own over the
final 13:17 to close out the half. Felice ignited the run with four
straight points, Coryea added six points and senior forward
Latoya Anderson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia/Genesee
C.C.) capped the half's scoring with a layup at the
32-second mark.
Le Moyne wraps up its season with a 15-13 record.
