WBB: DOLPHINS CRUISE TO 80-57 WIN AT ASSUMPTION BEHIND 14
THREE-POINTERS
Worcester, Mass. - Senior guard Katie Dunn (Whippany,
N.J./Morris Catholic/Holy Family) hit six of her team's
season-best 14 three-pointers to lead the Le Moyne College women's
basketball team to an 80-57 win over Assumption on Saturday
afternoon at Laska Gym.
Dunn led four Dolphins in double-figures with 20 points on 7-of-11
shooting, including 6-of-9 shooting from three-point range. Senior
forward Vanessa Holden (Suffern, N.Y./Immaculate Heart
(N.J.)) added 16 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Second-year graduate student Jacquelin Precious (Fonthill,
Ontario/Governor Simcoe/St. Peter's College) and junior
forward Courtney Coryea (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeast
Clinton) added 11 points apiece in the victory. Senior
guard Kathleen Gladstone (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh
Jesuit) dished out a game-high seven assists. Meagan Cook
came off the bench to lead the Greyhounds with 15 points, while
Bethany Plasski scored 10.
After Leslie Lupien hit a jumper on Assumption's first possession
of the second half, Le Moyne used a 17-7 run to push out to a 53-43
lead with 15:23 remaining in regulation. Dunn hit a pair of her
four second half three-pointers around a shot clock-beating
three-pointer by Coryea to spark the outburst.
After trading baskets over the ensuing nine minutes, Holden and
Dunn drilled three-pointers to take a 70-53 lead with 5:45 left in
the contest. Holden followed with a conventional three-point play,
Dunn connected on her final three-pointer of the game and sophomore
guard Ashley McFarlan (Kennesaw, Ga./St. John the
Baptist) hit a layup to give the Dolphins a game-high 23
point lead. Holden hit a pair of foul shots with 22 seconds
remaining to close out the game.
Each team opened the first half with a hot hand as the two teams
scored 13 points apiece over the first five and one-half minutes.
Cook drilled a three-pointer on Assumptions next possession to
spark a 10-5 run to give the Greyhounds a 23-18 lead with just
under 11 minutes remaining.
The Dolphins answered back with a 12-6 run of their own to take a
30-27 lead with 4:36 remaining in the half. After trading baskets
at the beginning of the streak, junior guard Megan Murphy
(Clinton Corners, N.Y./Millbrook) drilled her third shot
of the half from three-point range and classmate Siobhan
Shields (Mason, N.H./St. Bernard's Central Catholic) added
consecutive jumpers for the three-point lead. Assumption scored
seven of the half's final 13 points as the Dolphins took a 36-34
lead at the half.
The Dolphins, whose previous high this season was nine
three-pointers against Slippery Rock in the second game of the
season, connected on 14-of-30 attempts from behind the three-point
line. Le Moyne registered 20 assists on 30 field goals, while
committing only 10 turnovers.
Le Moyne (10-9, NE-10 7-7), which improved to 7-4 on the road this
season, returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 28 against American
International at 5:30 p.m.
