WBB: LE MOYNE DEALS NO. 24 ASSUMPTION FIRST LOSS OF SEASON,
78-71
Syracuse, N.Y. – Behind junior Courtney
Coryea’s (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeast Clinton) 23
points, the Le Moyne College women’s basketball team handed
Assumption College its first loss of the season with a 78-71
Northeast-10 Conference win at Ted Grant Court. The Greyhounds
entered the game ranked No. 24 in the latest USA Today/ESPN
Division II Coaches’ Poll.
Coryea finished with nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks to
go along with her team-best 23 points. Seniors Katie Dunn
(Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic/Holy Family) and
Vanessa Holden (Suffern, N.Y./Immaculate
Heart (N.J.)) each poured in 14 points and junior
Denise Scott (Yonkers, N.Y./Lincoln/C.C. of Rhode
Island) chipped in with 12 points off the bench for Le
Moyne. The Dolphins prevailed thanks to hot shooting from beyond
the arc. The team knocked down 8-of-13 three-point attempts for the
game.
After falling behind 3-0 in the game’s first minute, Le Moyne
rattled off a 12-point run sparked by a three-point basket from
graduate student Jacquelin Precious
(Fonthill, Ontario/Governor Simcoe/St. Peter's
College). The Dolphins pushed their largest lead of the
half to 10 points on a three-pointer from Scott at the 13:17 mark
but the Greyhounds rallied to tie the score with a 10-point spurt
of their own. The lead changed hands nine times over the final ten
minutes of the first half but Le Moyne entered the halftime break
with a two-point edge.
Back-and-forth action ensued in the second half to force six tied
scores and six lead changes. Assumption kept the game within five
points for the majority of the second half behind Bethany
Plasski’s 19-point second-half performance. But a five-point
swing pushed momentum in Le Moyne’s favor with 7:51 to play.
With the Greyhounds leading 58-56, Dunn buried a three-pointer and
was fouled after the play. A jumper from Coryea following the
inbounds play gave the Dolphins their fifth point in eight seconds
and a three-point advantage.
Le Moyne never trailed the rest of the way but a three-pointer from
senior Kathleen Gladstone (Cleveland,
Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) saved the Dolphins’ chances. With
the score tied at 65 and the shot clock expiring, Gladstone banked
in a three-pointer at the 3:25 mark. A perfect 4-for-4 effort from
the free-throw line by Scott sealed the 78-71 win.
Plasski’s 23 points led Assumption (5-1, NE-10 3-1) and Molly
Griffiths (14), Trish Gardner (12) and Kelly Meredith (11) finished
in double figures for the Greyhounds.
The Dolphins (4-2, NE-10 2-2) hit the road for back-to-back
Northeast-10 Conference games at Franklin Pierce and Pace. Le Moyne
returns to Ted Grant Court on Saturday, Dec. 13 when it hosts Saint
Michael’s at 1 p.m.
