WBB: DOLPHINS DOWN AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL, 56-52, FOR FIRST NE-10 VICTORY


Springfield, Mass. - Senior forward Vanessa Holden (Suffern, N.Y./Immaculate Heart (N.J.)) and junior forward Courtney Coryea (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeast Clinton) each recorded double-doubles to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 56-52 victory over American International on Tuesday night at Butova Gymnasium.

Following a 7-7 tie over the opening five minutes of the contest, Dolphins went on a 17-11 run to open up a six-point lead. Coryea tallied a pair of layups in the streak, while junior college transfer Denise Scott (Yonkers, N.Y./C.C.R.I.) converted a jumper and two free throws to cap the run.

The Yellow Jackets responded with a 13-7 run of their own to tie the contest at 31 going into intermission. Michelle DeRoma drilled two three-pointers to give AIC a two-point lead, before Coryea and Holden converted layups on consecutive possessions as the Dolphins regained the lead. Jeannette Johnathan connected on three-pointer with 20 seconds remaining to deliver the halftime score.

After trading baskets over the opening 2:20 of the second half, Le Moyne opened a four-point advantage on a layup by Holden with 13:33 remaining in the contest. The Yellow Jackets tallied an 8-4 advantage over the next 6:18 to tie the game for the 10th and final time.

Following a 30-second timeout by the Dolphins, senior guard Kathleen Gladstone (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Coryea recorded consecutive jump-shots to give Le Moyne a 53-49 lead with 4:29 remaining. AIC cut its deficit to two on its next possession, but Coryea registered a layup with 1:36 left and sophomore guard Danielle Felice (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) converted a foul shot for the final points of the game.

Coryea finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds to record her second consecutive double-double and third of the season, while Holden posted 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Laechia Conley scored a game-high 19 points for the Yellow Jackets, while reigning conference player of the week Stacy Boisvert tallied 13 points and nine rebounds.

Le Moyne (3-2, NE-10 1-2) returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 30 at home against Assumption College at 1:00 p.m.
