CORYEA SCORES 19 IN 85-73 VICTORY OVER SLIPPERY ROCK AT
GOLDEN BEAR CLASSIC
Kutztown, Pa. - Junior all-conference forward Courtney Coryea (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeast Clinton) scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to an 85-73 win over Slippery Rock on the second day of the Golden Bear Classic on Sunday afternoon at Kutztown University's Keystone Hall.
After falling behind 6-2 in the opening minutes of the first half, Le Moyne went on a 13-2 run over a four minute span to take a seven point lead, its largest of the half. Coryea, who started the streak with a pair of free throws, scored six points in the run.
The Rock responded to the Le Moyne run by scoring the game's next 10 points to take a two point advantage. A three-pointer by Julie Molloy ignited the streak, while Sasha Sales capped it with a jump shot. After Molloy hit another three-pointer to give The Rock a 27-26 lead with 4:06 remaining in the stanza, the Dolphins closed out the half with seven consecutive points to take a 33-27 lead into the intermission. Back-to-back layups by senior Latoya Anderson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia/Genesee C.C.) and junior Brittany Davis (Detroit, Mich./Oak Park/Labette College (Kan.)) and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Danielle Felice (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) provided the scoring for Le Moyne.
The Dolphins opened the second half with eight straight points to extend their lead to 14 points at the 18:13 mark of the half. Following back-and-forth scoring over the next eight minutes, Le Moyne went on a 15-8 run to open up a game-high 20 point advantage (74-54) with 6:10 remaining in the contest. Senior forward Vanessa Holden (Suffern, N.Y./Immaculate Heart (N.J.)) converted a pair of layups in the run for the Dolphins. Slippery Rock closed the game on a 19-11 streak to deliver the final score.
Coryea, who has scored in double figures in five consecutive games dating back to last season, tallied her 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from the foul line, while also pulling down four rebounds and blocking two shots. Senior point guard Kathleen Gladstone (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) recorded 15 points and dished out five assists. Senior guard Katie Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic/Holy Family) registered 13 points and five assists, while Holden posted 10 points and seven rebounds.
Molloy led for Slippery Rock players in double figures with 17 points, while Amanda Nero and Sales chipped in 12 points and Jess Schake added 11.
Le Moyne (2-0) returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 19 for its home opener against Northeast-10 Conference-foe Saint Rose at 5:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast throughout New York on Time Warner Sports Channel 26.
