LE MOYNE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CRUISES PAST MERRIMACK 85-59
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior Kim Wagoner (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) exploded for 25 points to lift Le Moyne past Merrimack 85-59 in a Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball game at Grant Court. The Dolphins (7-13, 3-12 Northeast-10) shot a season-high 54.7% from the field to snap a seven-game skid, while Merrimack (6-15, 4-12 Northeast-10) falls for the first time in three games.
Wagoner, 14th on the program's all-time scoring list with 930 career points, has scored 20 or more points 13 times in her three seasons with the Dolphins. The 25 points, which were a team season-high, came on a 10-for-17 effort from the field. She also dished out a game-high four assists and collected three steals.
Freshman forward Courtney Coryea (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) made seven-of-11 shots from the field for 14 points and senior point guard Lindsay Carr (Bronx, N.Y./Preston) added 10 points to join Wagoner in double figures for Le Moyne. The Dolphins made 18-of-29 shots (62.1%) from the field in the second half en route to 35-of-64 (54.7%) for the game. Le Moyne outrebounded its guests 47-29.
Bryna Batten scored 12 points off the bench to lead Merrimack. Gately Golden and Casey Miller netted 10 each. The Warriors were limited to 35.4% (23-for-65) shooting from the field and made just four-of-20 (20%) from 3-point range.
Le Moyne fell behind early, spotting the Warriors an 11-4 edge in the first three minutes of the game. The Dolphins barreled out of a timeout with 11 straight points and a 17-2 run overall to take a 21-13 lead on Wagoner's layup with 11:02 remaining in the opening half. Wagoner hit a pair of free throws with no time remaining in the first half to take a 40-27 lead into the intermission. The Dolphins extended their lead to as many as 27 points in the second half.
Le Moyne's 85 points were the most since a 90-86 overtime loss to Bryant on February 8, 2005 and the most in a regulation game since an 86-72 win over New Haven at the Capital Key Classic on December 30, 2001. The 26 point margin of victory is Le Moyne's best since topping Southern New Hampshire 77-51 on January 25, 2005.
Le Moyne hosts Saint Michael's on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
