WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: KIM WAGONER SCORES 16 POINTS AS LE MOYNE OPENS SEASON WITH 60-48 WIN OVER MERCYHURST
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior Kim Wagoner (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) scored 16 points to lead Le Moyne to a 60-48 season-opening win over Mercyhurst in a non-conference women's basketball game at Grant Court. The Dolphins (1-0) knocked down 26 free throws to outlast the Lakers (0-1) in the first of two meetings between the teams this season.
Wagoner led three Dolphins in double figures. Senior guard Lindsay Carr (Bronx, N.Y./Preston) scored 13 points and sophomore transfer Katie Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) scored 11 in her Le Moyne debut. Senior Lindsay Ellis (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds as Le Moyne outrebounded its guests 38-36. The Dolphins were 26-of-33 (78.8%) from the free throw line. It marked their most free throws since knocking down 27 in a 70-59 win over Merrimack in the fifth game of last season.
Stephanie Prischak paced Mercyhurst with a game-high 20 points on a 9-for-16 effort from the field. The Lakers were limited to a 15-for-54 (27.8%) effort from the field, but managed 15-of-17 (88.2%) from the free throw line. Julie Anderson made a game-high seven steals, but Mercyhurst forced Le Moyne into 26 turnovers, but the Lakers committed 23 of their own.
Le Moyne scored the first nine points and carried a 30-23 edge into the intermission. Mercyhurst trimmed it to a 38-35 deficit on Anderson's layup with 12:38 remaining, but Wagoner hit a free throw on the ensuing possession to spark a 7-0 Dolphins run over the next two minutes. Le Moyne led by at least five the rest of the way.
Le Moyne and Mercyhurst will meet again on December 19 at Mercyhurst. The Dolphins travel to Kutztown (Pa.) this weekend for the Kutztown Tournament. Le Moyne meets the hosts on Friday at 8 p.m.
