VB: DOLPHINS DROP MATCHES TO ADELPHI AND BRIDGEPORT
Garden City, N.Y. - Sophomore middle hitter Kelli Willets
(Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) totaled 17 kills, but the Le
Moyne College volleyball team was swept by Adelphi and Bridgeport
on Sunday afternoon at the Center for Recreation and Sport. The
Dolphins lost a Northeast-10 Conference match-up to Adelphi, 3-0,
before dropping a non-conference decision to Bridgeport, 3-1.
In the first game of the opening match, the Dolphins fell behind
11-3 as Adelphi's Jennifer McKenna served for four straight points.
The Panthers later pushed their lead out to 19-8 before capturing
the game with a 25-13 win. Kelsey Hackett and Chelsea Overholt each
landed three kills for the Panthers, while Willets tallied four
kills for the Dolphins.
In game two, the two teams battled back-and-forth before the
Panthers were able to record a 25-22 victory. After Adelphi took an
18-14 lead on a kill by Hilary Pavels, the Dolphins responded with
a 7-2 run to take the lead. However, the Panthers scored five of
the game's final six points, capped by a Patawe Simms kill. Simms
and Pavels registered four kills each, while Willets totaled
five.
After the two squads split the first 10 points of the third game,
the Panthers cruised to a 25-14 victory to complete the sweep.
Hackett followed a Le Moyne service error with five straight points
to push out to an 11-5 advantage. Adelphi used a 5-0 run to turn a
16-11 lead into a 10-point advantage before closing out the
match.
Willets finished the match with a career-best 11 kills in posting
a match-high .500 hitting percentage. Freshman Allison
Hebel (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) registered a
match-leading 13 digs, while senior setter Kaylin Brainerd
(Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) dished out 24 assists.
In the opening game of the nightcap, the Dolphins fell 25-14 to
the Purple Knights. The Dolphins evened the match at one game
apiece with a 25-23 victory in the second game. Bridgeport regained
control of the match with a 25-20 win in game three. The Purple
Knights closed out the match with a 25-22 decision in the fourth
game.
Cheek led the Dolphins with 11 kills and 10 digs for her fourth
double-double of the season. With 13 kills on the afternoon, Cheek
pushes her career total to 1,220, six shy of the program's record.
Senior libero Lindsey Gleason (Hamburg,
N.Y./Frontier) recorded a team-high 16 digs, while
Brainerd dished out 29 assists and added nine digs.
Le Moyne (14-8, NE-10 6-5) returns to the court on Saturday, Oct.
31 at Southern New Hampshire at 1:00 p.m.
