VB: DOLPHINS DEFEAT SAINT ANSELM HAWKS 3-1, AS CHEEK REGISTERS DOUBLE-DOUBLE


Syracuse N.Y. - Senior outside hitter Elizabeth Cheek (Huntington Beach, Calif./Rosary) recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball team to a 3-1 win over the Saint Anselm Hawks on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play at Ted Grant Court.

Saint Anselm opened the match with a 25-23 win over the Dolphins with the help of outside hitter Charlotte Tencza, who registered nine kills and three digs. With the score knotted at 4-4, Margaret Tereschuk would land two service aces as the Hawks pushed out to an 11-5 lead.  The Dolphins would make it close, but Saint Anselm would never relinquish its lead.

In the second game, freshman Bethany Fabian (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier) posted three service aces in helping the Dolphins secure a 25-18 victory over the Hawks to even the match at 1-1. Cheek would also contribute four kills throughout the game.  The Dolphins largest lead would come at the 22-13 mark as the Hawks would never get closer than six.

The Dolphins would win game three, 25-17, as Cheek landed another five kills and freshman middle hitter Morgan McDermott (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) added four of her own. With the score tied at 16, the Dolphins would only surrender one more point to the Hawks as senior setter Kaylin Brainerd (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and Fabian would serve out the game.

Le Moyne closed out the match with a 25-14 win in game four. The Dolphins used a 10-4 run to turn a 5-3 lead into an eight point lead.  Later in the game, Saint Anselm would score four straight points to close the gap to 18-12, but Le Moyne would finish the match on a 7-2 run.

Cheek registered 14 kills and 11 digs for another double-double, while Brainerd dished out 34 assists. Junior outside hitter Krista Prentice (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) tallied 10 kills, as McDermott added 10 kills of her own and registered five blocks.  Fabian would round out the Le Moyne attack as she would record career highs in service aces and blocks, with five and three respectively, while also landing six kills.

Le Moyne (12-6, NE-10 4-4) returns to action on Sunday as it hosts Northeast-10 opponent St. Michael's at 1:00 PM.
