VB: DOLPHINS SURVIVE SAINT ROSE CHARGE FOR 3-2 VICTORY
Syracuse, N.Y. - Senior outside hitter Elizabeth
Cheek (Huntington Beach, Calif./Rosary) landed a
season-high 15 kills, including five in the fifth game, as the Le
Moyne College volleyball team survived a come-from-behind charge by
Saint Rose to register a 3-2 win in Northeast-10 Conference action
on Wednesday night at Ted Grant Court.
In the opening game, the Dolphins jumped out to a 3-0 lead and
never trailed en route to a 25-23 win. After the Dolphins built
their largest lead at 14-7, the Golden Knights responded with a
10-4 run of their own to pull within one point. The two teams went
back-and-forth with the Dolphins pushing out to a 24-20 advantage,
before the Golden Knights made one last charge to get within 24-23.
However, Saint Rose followed with a service error to give the
Dolphins the game.
In the second game, the Dolphins turned an early tie into a 25-10
victory with an 18-3 run. Following a 7-7 tie, Le Moyne scored
seven straight points to pull away. After the two teams split the
next six points to push the score to 17-10, senior setter
Kaylin Brainerd (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool)
tallied eight straight points on serve, including three on service
aces, to close out the game.
The Golden Knights kept themselves in the match with a 25-21
victory in the third game. After battling to a 15-15 tie, the
Golden Knights recorded a 10-6 run to close their deficit in the
match to 2-1. Sarah Kahrs posted five kills in the game to lead the
Saint Rose charge, while Theresa Staulo dished out 13 assists.
Saint Rose evened the match at two games apiece with a
closely-played 25-23 win in the fourth game. The two teams posted
ties of 13-13, 20-20 and 22-22 before the Golden Knights put the
game away. Saint Rose tallied two straight points to force game
point, but a bad set gave the Dolphins the opportunity to tie the
score on their next serve. Le Moyne was unable to take advantage of
the error as the serve attempt failed to clear the net.
In the decisive fifth set, the Golden Knights jumped out to an
early 4-1 lead. The Dolphins responded with a 6-2 run, capped by a
Cheek kill, to take the lead, which they would not relinquish. Le
Moyne extended its lead to 13-9 before Saint Rose scored two
consecutive points to remain in the match. After a Saint Rose
attack error gave the Dolphins match point, freshman
Bethany Fabian (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier) slammed
down a kill off a pass from Brainerd to end the match.
Cheek added a season-best 18 digs to register her second
double-double of the season. Junior Krista Prentice
(Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) added her first double-double
of the campaign with 10 kills and 12 digs, while also posting six
blocks. Freshman middle hitter Morgan McDermott (Camillus,
N.Y./West Genesee) registered career-bests with 13 kills
and seven blocks, while Fabian recorded a career-high 14 digs.
Brainerd finished the contest with season-best 38 assists.
Le Moyne (11-4, NE-10 3-2) returns to the court for a pair of road
matches this weekend. The Dolphins visit conference-leading New
Haven on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and square off against Pace on
Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
