VB: DOLPHINS OPEN NE-10 PLAY WITH 3-1 VICTORY AT AMERICAN
INTERNATIONAL
Springfield, Mass. - Senior outside hitter Elizabeth Cheek
(Huntington Beach, Calif./Rosary) registered her first
double-double of the season to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball
team to a 3-1 win at American International on Wednesday night in
Northeast-10 Conference play at Butova Gymnasium.
The Dolphins opened the match by cruising to a 25-14 victory in
the first game. Le Moyne scored the first three points of the game
en route to leads of 12-6 and 20-11 before putting the game away
with a kill by Cheek. Cheek led the Dolphins in the game with six
kills and four digs.
In the second game, freshman Allison Hebel (Greenlawn,
N.Y./Harborfields) earned the first point with a kill and
followed by serving for nine consecutive points, including three
service aces, as the Dolphins exploded out to a 10-0 lead. The
Yellow Jackets closed to within five points on three occasions, but
the Dolphins scored four of the final six points for a 25-18 win.
Junior Krista Prentice (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home)
connected for four kills in the game, while Hebel landed three.
The Yellow Jackets edged out the Dolphins in the third game with a
27-25 win to force a fourth game. The two squads traded points
throughout the game, with AIC turning an 18-14 deficit into a
21-18, before the Dolphins evened the score at 21-21. The Yellow
Jackets had two opportunities to close out the game, but Le Moyne
prolonged the match each time before eventually falling on
back-to-back set errors. Hebel and classmate Morgan
McDermott (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) each recorded
three kills in the game.
Le Moyne closed out the match with a wire-to-wire win in the
fourth game. The Dolphins used an 11-4 run to turn a 13-12 lead
into an eight point lead. AIC scored three straight points to stay
in the match, but an attack error ended the match. McDermott led
the Dolphins with four kills in the game, while also recording a
pair of blocks.
Cheek registered 11 kills and 11 digs for her first double-double
of the season. Hebel landed a career best 10 kills and recorded
eight digs and six service aces, while McDermott posted 10 kills
and four blocks. Senior setter Kaylin Brainerd (Liverpool,
N.Y./Liverpool) dished out 25 assists and had eight digs,
while senior libero Lindsey Gleason (Hamburg,
N.Y./Frontier) had 14 digs.
Le Moyne (9-2, NE-10 1-0), which avenged a 3-0 home loss to the
Yellow Jackets on Sept. 13, returns to action on Saturday against
Southern Connecticut State at 11:00 a.m. The game is a part of
Athletics Homecoming Weekend and Le Moyne's Family Weekend.
