VB: LE MOYNE DOWNS ROBERTS WESLEYAN, 3-1, IN HOME OPENER


Syracuse, N.Y. - Senior Elizabeth Cheek (Huntington Beach, Calif./Rosary) landed nine kills and made nine digs to lead Le Moyne College to a 3-1 win over Roberts Wesleyan in non-conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Ted Grant Court. The Dolphins took the first two games with identical 25-23 scores, but dropped the third game, 25-18, before rebounding to take the match with a 25-22 win in the third set.

In the opening set, the Dolphins fell behind 10-6 before scoring six straight points behind the serve of freshman Bethany Fabian (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier). After Roberts Wesleyan regained the lead at 15-12, the Dolphins went on a 10-3 run to take control of the game. The Dolphins closed out the match as Cheek landed a kill off an assist from Danielle Fetsch (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West).

After trading points to open the second game, the Dolphins took a 6-5 and never trailed the rest of the match. Junior Krista Prentice (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) led the Dolphins in the game with four kills, while senior libero Lindsey Gleason (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) registered five digs and senior setter Kaylin Brainerd (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) dished out six assists.

The Raiders kept the match alive in the third set by cruising to a 25-18 victory. Roberts Wesleyan never trailed in the game and posted leads of 12-4, 17-9 and 21-11. Gisela Ocasio ended the game with a kill off a pass from Katie Maher. Mandie Bartz led the Raiders with five kills, while Maher had 11 assists. Cheek led the Dolphins in the game with five kills.

The Dolphins jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the final set on a service ace by freshman Katie Plukas (Rochester, N.Y./West Irondequoit). Plukas later gave the Dolphins an 18-14 lead with four points on serve. After Roberts Wesleyan bounced back for a 22-20 lead, Le Moyne scored the final five points behind the serve of Gleason. Fabian registered five digs in the game, while Plukas dished out five assists and had three service aces and Gleason recorded four digs.

Freshman middle hitter Morgan McDermott (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) landed seven kills in the match, while Gleason recorded 15 digs and Fabian registered 10 digs. Brainerd and Plukas dished out 15 and 13 assists in the match, respectively.

Le Moyne (3-0) returns to action on Saturday and Sunday as the host of the Le Moyne College Invitational.
