VBALL: DOLPHINS FALL IN FIVE GAMES TO MERRIMACK ON SENIOR DAY

Syracuse, N.Y. - Four Dolphins recorded double-digit kills, but Merrimack recorded a 3-2 Northeast-10 Conference win over the Le Moyne College volleyball team on Saturday at Grant Court.

The Dolphins opened the match by taking the first game 25-19. After a kill by senior Kristin Cobb (Cincinnatus, N.Y./Cincinnatus) pulled Le Moyne within 12-11, she rattled off seven consecutive points on serve to give the Dolphins a six-point lead. The two teams traded points over the remainder of the set, until junior outside hitter Elizabeth Cheek (Huntington Beach, Calif./Rosary) landed a kill to give the Dolphins the game.

In the second game, the Warriors jumped out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 25-22 win. After pulling within 16-11 on a kill by senior Jodi Smith (Angola, N.Y./Eden), the Dolphins tallied eight consecutive points behind Cobb's serving to take a three-point advantage. Following a Merrimack timeout, the teams traded points until the Warriors closed out the game with the final six points.

In the third game, the Warriors rallied back from an 11-5 deficit to take a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-19 victory. The Dolphins jumped out to the early lead behind the serving of Cheek and sophomore Krista Prentice (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home). After pulling within 19-17 on a kill by Molly Cindric, Alyssa Pickert registered eight consecutive points on serve to give the Warriors the game.

The Dolphins evened the match at two games apiece with a come-from-behind 25-23 victory in the fourth game. After back-and-forth action to open the game, the Dolphins turned a 6-3 deficit into a 13-7 lead behind the serve of Prentice and Smith. The Warriors then rallied from being down 17-11 to take an 18-17 lead. After falling behind 22-20, Smith landed a kill and scored three points on serve to put the Dolphins ahead 24-22. Cindric landed a kill for the Warriors to extend the game, but followed with an attack error to give Le Moyne the game.

In the decisive fifth game, Merrimack opened a 6-2 lead on the way to a 15-13 victory. Le Moyne battled back to knot the score at 9-9, but the Warriors recorded three straight points to pull back ahead. Cobb landed a kill off a set from junior Kaylin Brainerd (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) to get the Dolphins within one at 14-13, but Cindric ended the match with a kill for the 15-13 victory.

Smith led the Dolphins in the match with 11 kills and recorded 18 digs. Cobb, Cheek and sophomore Amanda Kershner (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) each totaled 10 kills in the contest, while Cobb recorded five service aces and Cheek added 19 digs and a pair of service aces. Brainerd turned in a double-double with 41 assists and 18 digs and classmate Lindsey Gleason (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) registered a match-high 23 digs. For the Warriors, Cindric landed a match-high 24 kills and setter Elyse Lorenz dished out 44 assists.

Prior to the contest, the three-member senior class of Cobb, Smith and middle hitter Caitlin Richardson (Victor, N.Y./Victor) were honored by the Gold Wave for their contributions to the program.

Le Moyne, the eighth seed, returns to action on Friday, Nov. 14 at 5:00 p.m. against top-seeded New Haven in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference tournament, hosted by Pace University.
