VOLLEYBALL SPLITS ON OPENING DAY OF LE MOYNE INVITATIONAL

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior Elizabeth Cheek (Huntington Beach, Calif./Rosary) recorded 25 kills over two matches to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball team to a split on the opening day of the Le Moyne College Invitational at Ted Grant Court on Saturday, Sept. 13. The Dolphins topped the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in their first match, 3-0, but then fell to Bridgeport, 3-1.

The Dolphins opened the first match with a 25-17 victory in the first set. Behind Cheek’s serve, Le Moyne jumped out to a 6-0 lead. After USP pulled within two at 12-10, Le Moyne rattled off four straight points on the serve of junior Kaylin Brainerd (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and closed out the match with four points from junior Lindsay Gleason (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier).

In the second set, senior Caitlin Richardson (Victor, N.Y./Victor) recorded four kills to lead the Dolphins to a 25-17 victory. After USP evened the score at 12 apiece, Richardson landed a kill and then served for three points as the Dolphins pulled away. Richardson closed out the set with back-to-back kills off assists by Brainerd.

With the Dolphins leading 5-3 in the third set, senior Jodi Smith (Angola, N.Y./Eden) registered five consecutive points to take a seven point lead. After a kill by Cheek, Gleason served for 12 straight points to put the Dolphins ahead 23-5.

Cheek registered five service aces and six digs along with 10 kills. Gleason totaled six digs in the match, while sophomore Krista Prentice (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) recorded five. Brainerd dished out 18 assists in the contest.

In the second match, Bridgeport took the opening set 26-24. After falling behind 14-8, Le Moyne pulled even at 17-17 behind the serves of Brainerd, Cheek and Gleason. The Dolphins built a 23-20 lead, but the Purple Knights scored six of the final seven points for the victory.

Following a 5-5 tie, Smith served the Dolphins to a 17-5 lead en route to taking the set 25-14. Richardson capped the set with a kill off an assist from Brainerd.

Bridgeport opened the third set with three straight points before the Dolphins evened the score at 10. After back and forth play throughout the set, the Purple Knights finished off the set with an 8-3 run for a 25-20 win.

The Purple Knights capped the match with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set. After a kill by Cheek made the score 7-7, Bridgeport went on a 6-2 run for a four point lead. Le Moyne pulled within 20-10 after a kill by Kristin Cobb (Cincinnatus, N.Y./Cincinnatus), Bridgeport closed the match with five straight points.

Cheek led the Dolphins with 15 kills and eight digs in the match, while Richardson landed 11 kills. Smith registered seven kills and eight digs, while Prentice had six kills and seven digs. Brainerd dished out 34 assists in the match and Gleason had 10 digs.

The Dolphins return to action on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the second day of action of the Le Moyne Invitational.
