Brookhaven, N.Y. – Shortstop Nicolette Sinagra hit a two-run homer in the first game and right fielder Lauren Alexander and third baseman Tracey Balinskas homered in the second game to lead Molloy College to a sweep of the Le Moyne College softball team in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Dowling's Golden Lions Field. The Lions won the opener, 6-0, and took the nightcap, 5-1.

The Lions scored the only runs they would need in the opener in the third inning. After center fielder Jeana Frey reached on an error by the shortstop to start the frame, Sinagra blasted a home run to left field.

Molloy tacked on four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth. First baseman Victoria Gunnels doubled to center and Alexander singled to the third baseman to open the inning. After pitcher Megan Butterworth walked with one out to load the bases, Sinagra was hit by a pitch to force in Gunnels. Catcher Milan Botte then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Alexander. After Sinagra stole second, second baseman Brenda Lee doubled to left center to plate Butterworth and Sinagra.

Junior lefty Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) suffered the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) over three and two-thirds innings pitched. Butterworth earned her seventh win of the year in the circle after striking out eight over five scoreless innings. Freshman Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) recorded three of Le Moyne's six hits in the game.

Molloy opened the scoring in the second game with two runs on one hit and two Le Moyne errors. After Butterworth reached on a fielder's choice, Sinagra doubled and Botte reached on an error to load the bases, Lee walked to force in Butterworth. Balinskas then grounded out to drive in Sinagra.

With one out in the second, Alexander blasted a solo home run to center to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.

Balinskas, whose sister Lindsay was a member of Le Moyne's 2006 East Region championship team and 2008 Northeast-10 Conference title team, led off the sixth inning with a home run to center field. Designated player Dayna White followed with a triple to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Alexander.

Le Moyne got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh as sophomore catcher Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) launched a solo home run to left field to open the frame.

Harrison took the loss after giving up five runs on five hits over six innings, while striking out four. Kelley Jansen earned the win after striking out 10 batters over seven innings, while yielding one run on five hits.

Le Moyne (2-7) opens Northeast-10 Conference play and its new softball complex on Tuesday against The College of Saint Rose at 3:00 p.m. The games will mark the 14th and 15th contests in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions. The Golden Knights currently hold a 6-5 lead.
