SB: #11 ALABAMA-HUNTSVILLE SWEEPS #17 DOLPHINS, 2-1, 4-0

Huntsville, Ala. – Sam Deep went 3-for-3 with three runs scored to lead 11th-ranked Alabama-Huntsville to a doubleheader sweep of 17th-ranked Le Moyne College in non-conference softball action on Thursday afternoon at Chargers Softball Complex. The Chargers held on for a 2-1 win in game one and won game two, 4-0.

After five scoreless innings in the opening game, the Chargers struck for two runs on two hits. Deep led off the frame with a bunt single and then stole second base. After Beth Lawson drew a walk and Whitney Hawkins recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance each base-runner, Whitney Schrimsher was intentionally walked to load the bases. Erin Duke then reached on a fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt attempt that allowed Deep to score. Kellie Johnson followed with a single to center field to drive in pinch-runner Audrey McClanahan. The Dolphins got out of the jam on fly outs by the next two batters.

The Dolphins rallied in the top of the seventh inning, but were unable to score the tying run. Sophomore designated player Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) reached on a bunt single to open the inning. After a fly out and a sac bunt, sophomore shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) singled to left field to drive in Cashel from second base. Hawkins was able to end the game by getting a ground out to shortstop.

Junior Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) took the loss for the Dolphins after yielding two runs on five hits, while striking out two batters, over six innings. Hawkins improved to 7-1 on the season by striking out two batters and allowing just one run on four hits over seven innings pitched.

In the nightcap, UAH scored the only run it would need on one hit in the second inning. With two outs, Krystal Johnson was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a double to right center by Michelle Ingram.

The Chargers, who opened the season ranked first in the NFCA poll, doubled their lead in the third inning with one run on a pair of hits. Deep doubled to center to open the frame and scored two batters later on a single to right field by Hawkins.

UAH capped the game’s scoring with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Emily Roach blasted a solo home run to center field. After a bunt single by Deep, Lawson, a first team All-American last year, doubled down the left field line to plate Deep.

Whitney Gilbert picked up her seventh win of the season by striking out eight over seven innings, while allowing six hits. Junior Katelyn Fowler (Sandy Creek, N.Y./Sandy Creek) took the loss after yielding four runs on eight hits over six innings of work.

Le Moyne (0-4) returns to action on Friday, March 19 at C.W. Post at 1:00 p.m.
