SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAMS COMPETE AT ITHACA COLLEGE INVITATIONAL
Ithaca, N.Y. – Freshman Tara O'Donnell (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) won the 200-yard backstroke to lead the Le Moyne College women's swimming and diving team at the three-day, 11-team Ithaca College Invitational at the Ithaca Athletics & Events Center Aquatics Pavilion. The men's team was led at the invitational by freshman diver Josh Byrne (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee).
O'Donnell earned 85 of Le Moyne's 307 points over the weekend by turning in three top-five performances. She opened the invitational on Friday night by placing fifth in the 200-yard individual medley in a season-best 2:09.10 to earn 25 points. On Saturday morning, she turned in a second-place finish and earned 28 points in the 100-yard butterfly with an NCAA "B" cut time of 57.75 seconds, just 0.55 seconds behind first place. O'Donnell closed out the invitational on Sunday by winning the 200-yard backstroke in a pool record and NCAA "B" cut time of 2:03.24. The previous pool-record time of 2:03.44 was set by O'Donnell's older sister Katie '12 at last year's Ithaca College Invitational.
Junior Allie Scorzelli (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) earned the Dolphins 15 points by placing in the top-20 in a pair of events. On Saturday morning, she turned in a 17th-place performance in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:55.08, her fastest time of the year by over eight seconds. Scorzelli then placed 19th in the 200-yard butterfly in a season-best 2:23.32 on Saturday night. Senior Kristina Schmitt (Alden, N.Y./Nardin Academy) recorded 13 points in the two diving events. She posted an 18th-place finish in the three-meter diving event with a career-best 285.45 points. She then recorded a career-high score of 246.00 off the one-meter board to earn six points for the Dolphins. Senior Jacqueline Daly (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) placed 17th in the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best 1:02.99 to earn nine points, while placing 23rd in the 200-yard backstroke in a season-best 2:18.19 to earn two points. Sophomore Kerry Steve (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) registered an 18th-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 19:30.61 to record seven points.
Byrne, named the Northeast-10 Conference diver of the week twice this season, earned 46 of Le Moyne's 353 points. On Friday night, he recorded a score of 423.70 to place sixth in the one-meter diving event to earn 24 points. He then finished eighth with a season-best score of 414.25 off the three-meter board to register 22 points on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Ben Verdi (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's) picked up 37 points on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday morning, he touched the wall in 20th place in the 400-yard IM with a season-best time of 4:32.87 for five points. He then earned 16 points on Saturday night by placing 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.29, his fastest time of the year by 1.38 seconds. Verdi closed out the invitational with an 11th-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:16.66, his best time in the event by 3.14 seconds. Senior Scott Thieke (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) placed in three individual events to earn 26 points. He opened Friday's competition by placing 22nd in the 500-yard freestyle in a season-best 4:56.63 to earn three points. In the 400-yard IM on Saturday morning, he finished 16th with a season-best time of 4:27.13 to pick up 11 points, while he registered a time of 17:27.62 in the 1,650-yard freestyle on Sunday morning to place 15th and earn 12 points. Freshman Daniel Tarbrake (Beltsville, Md./Gonzaga College High) turned in Le Moyne's top finish by placing ninth in the 100-yard butterfly to earn 20 points with a time of 53.00 seconds, his fastest time of the season by 1.60 seconds. Junior Connor Agen (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) earned 15 points in the 1,650-yard freestyle by placing 12th in 17:12.75. Junior Tyler Olson (Warners, N.Y./West Genesee) and freshman Chris Mosconi (Gloversville, N.Y./Gloversville) each placed in a pair of events. Olson earned nine points by placing 18th in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.15 seconds for seven points and 23rd in the 100-yard in a season-best 49.11 seconds for two points. Mosconi tallied seven points by finishing 22nd in the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best 56.25 seconds for three points and 21st in the 200-yard backstroke in a season-best 2:05.47 for four points. Sophomore Ricky Divaccaro (Woodstown, N.J./Woodstown) earned three points by placing 22nd in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.28 seconds, his fastest time of the year by 0.71 seconds.
The Dolphins return to the pool on Sunday, January 13th at Northeast-10 Conference foe Saint Michael's at 1:00 p.m.
