MSOC: #24 LE MOYNE DOWNS BLOOMFIELD, 3-1, IN NON-CONFERENCE
ACTION
Syracuse, N.Y. - Senior back Davide DiPaola (Rochester,
N.Y./Greece-Athena/Niagara) scored the game-winning goal
off a header with 4:48 remaining to lead the 24th-ranked Le Moyne
College men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Bloomfield in
non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland
Athletic Complex.
The Dolphins, playing their final non-conference match of the
season, opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Sophomore
Marcus Debottis (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North
Syracuse) crossed the ball from the left sideline to
classmate Josh Mabee (Clifton Park,
N.Y./Shenendehowa), who took the ball off a bounce and
volleyed the ball with his left foot into the right side of the
goal at the 18:22 mark. Each team registered five shots over the
remaining 26 minutes of the stanza, but neither could find the back
of the net to go into the intermission with the Dolphins leading by
one.
Just over eight minutes into the second half, Bloomfield knotted
the score at one goal apiece following a defensive miscue by the
Dolphins. Off a failed clear attempt, Evans Tageo came up with the
ball in the penalty box and passed to his right to Jason Bryan, who
fired a low shot from 12 yards inside the right post. The Deacons
had a chance to take the lead two and one-half minutes later, but
Tageo's shot hit off the crossbar and senior goalkeeper
Steve White (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) corralled
the ball before Bloomfield had a chance for the rebound.
Following a foul by the Deacons in the center of the field,
sophomore midfielder Jesse Carr (Skaneateles,
N.Y./Skaneateles) served the free kick into the box, where
DiPaola headed it over goalkeeper Steven Alonso's outstretched
arms. Le Moyne added an insurance goal 2:24 later off a breakaway.
Freshman Bob Buchanan (Ballston Lake,
N.Y./Shenendehowa) collected the ball in Le Moyne's
defensive third and dribbled up the field. After reaching midfield,
Buchanan passed off to sophomore Bryce Martin (Cazenovia,
N.Y./Chittenango) before receiving the ball back at the
top of the penalty box. With a defender closing in, Buchanan passed
to his right to junior forward Angelo Reina (Frankfort,
N.Y./Utica Notre Dame), who scored into the left side of
the goal for his 13th tally of the season.
Each team registered 14 shots in the contest, while Le Moyne held a
7-3 edge in corner kicks. White posted two saves in net for the
Dolphins, while Alonso turned away a breakaway shot by Reina in the
14th minute.
Le Moyne (12-2-2) returns to action on Saturday against Stonehill
at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the game, seniors DiPaola and White will be
honored for their contributions to the program.
