MSOC: #20 LE MOYNE UPSET BY SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE, 2-1, IN
OVERTIME
New Haven, Conn. - Sophomore forward Eric Vazquez scored with 4:19
remaining in the second overtime period to give Southern
Connecticut State a 2-1 come-from-behind upset victory over
20th-ranked Le Moyne College in Northeast-10 Conference men's
soccer action on Wednesday night at Jess Dow Field.
Junior forward Angelo Reina (Frankfort, N.Y./Utica Notre
Dame) gave the Dolphins a 1-0 lead just 35 seconds into
the contest. Reina took a pass from classmate Joe Viviano
(North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and beat
goalkeeper Andrew Esposito. Le Moyne posted a 5-3 advantage in
shots the remainder of the first half, but was unable to add to its
lead and went into the intermission with the lead.
Le Moyne, which would have clinched a spot in the Northeast-10
Conference tournament with a victory, held a one-goal lead until
there was only one minute and 35 seconds left in regulation.
Sophomore midfielder Jason Villagomez scored at the 43:25 mark of
the second half after taking a pass from freshman forward Seth
Ragaini. After a scoreless first overtime period, Vazquez tallied
an unassisted goal in the 106th minute to give the Owls their first
win over the Dolphins since 2006.
Senior goalkeeper Steve White (Cortland,
N.Y./Cortland), who yielded multiple goals for the first
time in nine games, registered five saves in the loss for the
Dolphins. Esposito turned away five shots after allowing Reina's
goal. The Owls edged the Dolphins in shots, 11-10, including an 8-4
advantage after halftime, while also posting a 6-1 margin in corner
kicks.
Le Moyne (10-2-2, NE-10 7-2-1), which had its eight game unbeaten
streak snapped (7-0-1), travels to North Andover, Mass. for a 5:00
p.m. tilt with Merrimack on Saturday.
