MSOC: LAWLOR'S OVERTIME GOAL PROPELS DOLPHINS TO NORTHEAST-10 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Lowell, Mass. - Sophomore defender Sean Lawlor (Kirkham, Preston/Baines School) scored on a free kick in the third minute of the second overtime period to give the fourth-seeded Le Moyne College men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over No. 1 seed UMass Lowell in the semifinals of the 2008 Northeast-10 Conference tournament on Wednesday evening at Cushing Field.
The Dolphins opened the contest's scoring just over midway through the first half. Freshman midfielder Jesse Carr (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles), a member of the conference's All-Rookie squad, tallied his third goal of the season with a looping shot from the top of the penalty box into the top right corner of the goal off a feed from first team all-conference midfielder Brandon Morse (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee). The River Hawks recorded four shots over the final 15 minutes of the half, but could not convert, as the Dolphins took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
UMass Lowell (11-3-4), which entered the contest unbeaten in its last nine contests, knotted the score at one apiece less than 27 minutes into the second half. Sophomore forward Stephen Potcner headed in a cross from the right side by senior all-conference midfielder Jamie Wangia at the 71:47 mark. The River Hawks held a 7-0 edge in shots over the 18 minutes of the contest, but could not net the game-winner.
Following a handball on UMass Lowell, Lawlor recorded his fourth goal of the season as he slotted his free kick from the top right corner of the penalty box inside the far left post just over two minutes into the second overtime period.
UMass Lowell outshot Le Moyne in the contest 22-11, including 15-4 in the second half, while also holding a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Steve White (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) registered five saves in 102 minutes between the pipes for the Dolphins, while second team all-conference selection Ryan Richards recorded just one stop for the River Hawks.
Le Moyne (13-4-3), which snapped a six-game losing streak at UMass Lowell and recorded its first win at Cushing Field under head coach Tom Bonus, advances to the conference finals on Saturday at 1 p.m. to face Franklin Pierce in Rindge, N.H. for the second time in four seasons. In the two squads' prior meeting this season, the Ravens topped the Dolphins, 2-1 in overtime, on Sept. 9.
