DAVID CLIFTON SCORES A PAIR OF SECOND-HALF GOALS TO LEAD NO. 2 FRANKLIN PIERCE PAST LE MOYNE 3-0
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Graduate student David Clifton (London, England) scored a pair of second half goals to lead No. 2 Franklin Pierce past Le Moyne 3-0 in a Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer match at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Ravens (11-0-1, 7-0-1 Northeast-10) remain unbeaten in 12 games this season, while Le Moyne drops to 8-4-1 overall and 6-3-1 in Northeast-10 action.
Franklin Pierce, a national finalist in 2005, got on the board in the first minute. Jason Grier (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) knocked a shot off a Le Moyne defender inside the near post for his first goal of the season.
Clifton converted a crossing pass from Frantz Francois (West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Lakes) in the 65th minute to make it 2-0. Nearly four minutes later, Francois beat his defender into the right corner and deposited a crossing pass where Clifton fought through traffic to score his second goal of the match.
Junior goalkeeper James Thorpe (East Longmeadow, Mass./Bridgton Academy) made four saves for his eighth shutout of the season and school-record 33rd career shutout. Le Moyne goalkeeper Steve White (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) made five saves. The Ravens, ranked No. 2 in the NSCAA Division II national poll and the top team in the New England region, outshot their hosts 16-10 overall and by an 11-5 margin in the second half.
Le Moyne, the seventh-ranked team in the New England Region,
hosts UMass Lowell on Saturday at 1 p.m.
