NCAA MEN'S SOCCER: FRANKLIN PIERCE 5, LE MOYNE 0
RINDGE, N.H. - Second-seeded Franklin Pierce scored once
in the opening half and poured in four goals in the second half to
knock off No. 3 seed Le Moyne 5-0 in the NCAA New England Regional.
The Northeast-10 Conference champion Dolphins complete the 2005
season at 14-6-2.
“I thought whichever team scored first would dictate the
game,” sixth-year Le Moyne head coach Tom
Bonus said following the game. “We had two great
chances after they scored in the first half and didn’t put
either away. We got behind in the second half so we tried to press
them and get numbers forward. They took advantage with a couple of
counterattacks.”
Christopher Joyce
(Jarrow,
England) put the Ravens (14-5-4)
on the board with the only goal they would need in the
12th minute of the contest. After a free kick, he
collected it off a scramble and knocked it home to make it 1-0.
Joyce ignited a four-goal second half outburst with his NCAA
Divison II leading 26th goal of the season. He took a
feed from Marek Hawrylik
(Olsztyn,
Poland) and fired a low shot past
Le Moyne senior goalkeeper Tim Mann
(Silver Spring,
Md./Paint Branch) to make it 2-0
seven minutes and nine seconds into the second half. Jason
Grier (Norwell,
Mass.), Raphael Guimaraes
(Marlboro, Mass.) and
Evan Luster
(Newington,
Conn.) added goals to put the
game out of reach.
Le Moyne, ranked No. 23 in the latest NSCAA Division II poll, had
beaten the Ravens 1-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship
on Sunday, but could not muster a goal against the nation’s
15th-ranked team. The Dolphins were outshot 13-7.
Franklin Pierce goalkeeper James Thorpe
(East Longmeadow,
Mass.) made three saves, while
Mann stopped two for Le Moyne.
Franklin Pierce advances to meet top seed Dominican on Saturday at
7 p.m. Le Moyne’s first trip to the NCAA tournament since
1977 and third in program history ends after one match. The
Dolphins won the Northeast-10 Conference Championship for the first
time and totaled at least ten wins for the fifth consecutive
season.
