Syracuse, N.Y. – The No. 2 Le Moyne College men’s
lacrosse team opened the 2009 campaign with a 15-4 win over No. 6
Dowling College in non-conference action at West Genesee High
School. Sophomores Matt Chadderdon (Auburn,
N.Y./Auburn) and Jack Harmatuk (Syracuse,
N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/Syracuse) each scored four
goals in the win.
The Dolphins exploded for eight goals in the third quarter,
including four over the first four
minutes, to break open the game. Chadderdon scored a pair of
unassisted goals to ignite Le Moyne’s six-goal scoring
streak. Senior Jack Mooney (Webster, N.Y./Webster
Thomas) rocketed in his second goal of the game before
Harmatuk wrapped a pair of goals around a man-up goal by sophomore
Jack Venditti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Badwinsville).
After Dowling cut the lead to seven, at 10-3, sophomore
Nick DiSarro (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) netted
back-to-back goals to round out third-quarter scoring. Senior
Brooks Robinson (Preble, N.Y./Tully) handed out a
pair of assists and classmate Brian Welch (Ithaca,
N.Y./Ithaca) added another in the decisive third
quarter.
Chadderdon registered his fourth goal a minute into the final
quarter. After John McClure put in his third goal of the game for
the Golden Lions, sophomore Corey Bulken (Baldwinsville,
N.Y./Baldwinsville) fed Harmatuk for his fourth tally of
the game. Junior Mike Rabbitt (Simsbury,
Conn./Simsbury) sent home the game’s final score,
his second goal on the afternoon, at the 6:24 mark to deliver the
15-4 result.
Four different Dolphins (Harmatuk, Rabbitt, Mooney and Chadderdon)
accounted for the team’s four first-half goals. Le Moyne
jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Dowling closed the gap on
McClure’s first two scores. The Dolphins managed 28 shots in
the first half and held an 18-2 first-quarter shots advantage.
Dowling goalkeeper Ryan Dougherty turned away seven shots in the
first quarter and finished with 12 saves for the game.
Le Moyne senior netminder Doug McIver (Altamont,
N.Y./Albany Academy) accumulated four saves on the
afternoon, including a pair of crucial stops with less than three
minutes to play in the first half. Le Moyne’s starting
defensive unit of seniors Tim MacLean (Troy, Mich./Detroit
Jesuit) and Marc Cizenski (Syracuse, N.Y./West
Genesee) and juniors Drew Bezek (Lowville,
N.Y./Lowville) and Paul Sullivan (Buffalo,
N.Y./St. Francis) caused six Golden Lion turnovers and
picked up eight ground balls.
The game was a rematch of the 2006 NCAA Division II National
Championship, which Le Moyne won to claim the second of its three
titles. The win also marked the Dolphins’ fourth in a row
against the Golden Lions.
No. 2 Le Moyne (1-0) returns to action March 7 in Baltimore, Md. to
face No. 10 Limestone at Johns Hopkins University.
