LE MOYNE TRIO TABBED FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICA BY USILA
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Three members of the Le Moyne College men’s lacrosse team were named to the 2008 Division II All-America First Team. Mike McDonald collected DII Player and Attackman of the year honors and earned first team honors for the third time in his career. Alex Bily was picked to the first team after collecting second team accolades in 2006. Drew Bezek was tabbed as an All-American in the same season he was named Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
Mike McDonald was named the 2008 Enners Award winner for Outstanding Player in Division II. This is the second time a Le Moyne has received this honor (Travis Tarr - 2005). Additionally, he was named the 2008 Turnbull Award winner for Outstanding Attackman Divisionn II for the second consecutive season.
McDonald’s awards continue to pile up as his career at Le Moyne nears its end. Twice the Most Outstanding Player of the Division II National Championship, the senior from Latham, N.Y. has picked up All-American honors every year of his career. He earned an honorable mention after his freshman season and his been a first team member in every year since. McDonald’s lacrosse resume is filled with numerous distinctions from the Northeast-10 Conference, as well. He earned Rookie of the Year honors in his first year on the Heights and has been a member of the All-Northeast-10 Conference First Team in each of his four seasons. This season, he became only the third Dolphin to collect Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year honors.
Statistically, McDonald is a member of an elite group of Le Moyne men’s lacrosse players to score 200 points in a career. He ranks second on the college’s all-time points list (224), second on its all-time goals list (135) and fourth on its all-time assists list (89). This season, he paces Le Moyne in points (56) and assists (27). And the senior’s numbers in the classroom helped him earn Northeast-10 Conference All-Academic honors three times during his career.
A product of the legendary West Genesee High School lacrosse program, Bily has been the glue of Le Moyne’s midfield for three seasons. He earned second team All-America and second team All-Northeast-10 Conference honors after his sophomore campaign. This season, he was named to the All-Northeast-10 Conference First Team. Bily is Le Moyne’s top scoring midfielder in 2008 with 19 goals and 12 assists. Against Bryant University in the National Semifinals, he led the Dolphins with a five-point effort.
Bezek, a sophomore from Lowville, N.Y., made the most of his shot at a full-time starting role in Le Moyne’s defensive unit. He was key part of a defense that allowed a Division II-best 3.27 goals per game. In addition to being picked to the All-Northeast-10 Conference First Team, he was recognized as the conference’s top defender.
Junior Goalie Doug McIver was named to the second team All-American squad. The netminder from Alatmont, NY recorded a 15-2 record in 2008 and led the nation in goals against average and save percentage. McIver was named to the NE-10 All-Conference second team.
Seniors Nick Gatto at the midfield position and Mike Malone on long stick defense were named honorable mention.
With seven more All-America representatives, the Le Moyne College men’s lacrosse program now claims 54 All-Americans since 1993.
