LE MOYNE NAMED PRESEASON #1 BY INSIDE LACROSSE/FACE-OFF YEARBOOK, DEFENDING CHAMPIONS PICKED TO REPEAT
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Defending National Champion Le Moyne tops the Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook preseason 2007 Division II men's poll. The Dolphins topped Dowling College 12-5 in the 2006 NCAA Division II National Championship game in front of 23,990 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia to capture their second national championship in three seasons. Le Moyne returns the nation's top midfielder in senior Matt Cassalia (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee), the nation's top goaltender in senior Jared Corcoran (Concord, N.H./Concord), and 2006 NCAA Championship Most Oustanding Player Mike McDonald (Latham, N.Y./Shaker).
Cassalia, the Lt. Donald McLaughlin, Jr. Award recipient as the top midfielder, scored 29 goals and assisted on five for 34 points in his first season with the Dolphins after transferring from Loyola (Md.) College. He also won 81-of-126 (.643) faceoffs for the Dolphins.
Corcoran, the Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Award winner as the top goalkeeper for the second consecutive season, added to his already impressive career with an 18-0 mark, the nation's top goals against average (3.81) and top save percentage (.665). The only member of the Dolphins from New Hampshire, he is 46-1 with an all-time record 4.25 goals against average in three seasons.
McDonald, the 2006 NCAA Championship Most Oustanding Player, led Le Moyne in scoring for the second consecutive season. The junior netted 41 goals and 20 assists for 61 points during his sophomore season. In Le Moyne's two NCAA tournament games, he tallied 11 goals - including four in the 12-5 national championship win over Dowling.
Le Moyne also returns junior midfielder Alex Bily (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee), a 2006 second team All-America selection, and senior close defenseman Matt Juriga (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks), a 2006 Honorable Mention All-America. Bily scored 14 goals and assisted on eight for Le Moyne in 2006. Juriga, making his first appearance on an All-America team, grabbed 44 ground balls - tops among those not taking faceoffs and third overall for Le Moyne.
National semi-finalist Mercyhurst was tabbed second behind the Dolphins with National Runner-Up Dowling, New York Tech, and C.W. Post being selected third through fifth.
Le Moyne, the national champion in 2004 and 2006, opens its title defense against Adelphi on Saturday, March 3rd. The Dolphins play six teams ranked in the preseason top ten.
