Senate Resolution No. 6055
Passed unanimously by the New York State Senate on June 20,
2006
BY: Senator DEFRANCISCO
CONGRATULATING the Le Moyne College Men's Lacrosse Team
and Coach Dan Sheehan upon the occasion of capturing the 2006 NCAA
Division II Men's Lacrosse Championship
WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be
achieved only through strenuous practice, team play and team
spirit, nurtured by dedicated coaching and strategic planning;
and
WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical
development of the young people of this State, preparing them for
the future by instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging
a standard of healthy living, imparting a desire for success and
developing a sense of fair play, teamwork, and competition; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those young people within the State of New York who,
achieving outstanding success in athletic competition, have
inspired and brought pride to their college; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate the
Le Moyne College Men's Lacrosse Team and Head Coach Dan Sheehan
upon the occasion of capturing the 2006 NCAA Division II Lacrosse
Championship; and
WHEREAS, To bring home a national title, as did the 2006 Le Moyne
Dolphins, is a remarkable achievement; to have won two such
championships in the last three seasons, as has been done by the Le
Moyne Men's Lacrosse Team, is a truly outstanding accomplishment;
and
WHEREAS, In addition to its success in capturing two national
championship titles, the Dolphins' excellence in recent years can
be found in the many other achievements of this most successful
team: 2006 was the fifth consecutive year that Le Moyne earned the
right to compete in the NCAA tournament; over the past four
seasons, the Le Moyne Men's Lacrosse team has won 62 games against
just two defeats; Le Moyne posted the nation's best "goals against"
average, allowing their opponents just 3.67 goals per game; the
team's "goals against" average marked just the second time in NCAA
history that a team had allowed fewer than four goals per game in
lacrosse; this statistic is even more noteworthy since it was Le
Moyne who first achieved this record in 2005; and
WHEREAS, The Dolphins have had, for the last six seasons, the top
defense in the nation; and
WHEREAS, The Le Moyne Men's Lacrosse Team was ranked number one in
every poll that was taken in 2006; and
WHEREAS, The 2006 regular season marked The Dolphins' seventh
consecutive season with a perfect record in their conference, the
Northeast 10 Conference; the Dolphins' overall regular season
record was 14 wins and no losses and thereby extended to 60 the
number of consecutive regular season games it has won; and
WHEREAS, The Dolphins have not lost a non-NCAA tournament game
since 2002; 2006 was the team's fourth consecutive perfect season;
and
WHEREAS, In the NCAA championship tournament, Le Moyne defeated
Limestone College in the semifinals by a score of 22 - 3 and
thereby earned the right to compete in the NCAA Division II finals
in Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, On Sunday, May 28, a confident Dolphins team prepared to
play at Lincoln Financial Field before a record crowd of 23,990
who, in the first game of the day, saw Central New York's SUNY
Cortland capture the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse title; that
was to be the warm-up for a second game that was never close; the
Dolphins totally dominated finalist newcomer Dowling by a score of
12 - 5 to win its second Division II title in three years; The
Dolphins led just 5-3 at the half, but scored the first two goals
of the second half, answered Dowling's fourth goal with two more
tallies, and then scored the only three goals of the fourth quarter
to assure victory; and
WHEREAS, No team, no matter how gifted one or a handful of its
members may be, can succeed without outstanding talent throughout
its entire roster; such was the case for the 2006 Le Moyne Dolphins
whose players included: Alex Bily, Dan Brown, Andrew Carducci, Matt
Cassalia, Marc Cizenski, Jared Corcoran, Brian Cost, Matt Crandall,
Tom Donahue, Chris Doran, Matt Emerson, Nate Evans, Markus Fallico,
Jim Fiacco, Matt Foster, Blake Gale, Pete Gibbons, Brian Griffin,
Tyler Hill, Matt Juriga, Kevin Kohl, Jeff Lewis, Ryan Lewis, Mike
Lindstrom, Jason Longo, Tim MacLean, Mike Malone, Mike McDonald,
Doug McIver, Mike McLaughlin, Pat McPartlin, Chris Moore, Pat
O'Donnell, Russ Oechsle, Rob Poole, Mike Recor, Craig Rosecrans,
Ted Rund, Ed Street, Travis Tarr, Brian Welch, Jordan Witt, Brad
Wolken, and Dan Ziegler; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Le Moyne Men's Champion Lacrosse team
is due in great part to the efforts of Head Coach Dan Sheehan and
his outstanding Assistant Coaches who include Brian Datellas, Kevin
Michaud and Eric MacCaull; the team was also assisted by the
never-ending encouragement and support of friends, family and the
entire Le Moyne College Athletic Department, as well as the Central
New York community; and
WHEREAS, While lacrosse is a team sport, national recognition of
some Dolphin team members must be noted: eight Dolphins garnered
All-America status from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse
Association and they include Alex Bily, Matt Cassalia, Jared
Corcoran, Matt Juriga, Mike McDonald, Tarr and Chris Moore;
further, Chris Doran was named Scholar All-American; and
WHEREAS, Other individual honors include those who were named as
the best in their positions: Matt Cassalia won the Lt. Donald
McLaughlin, Jr. Award as the top midfielder; Jared Corcoran who
earned the Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Award as the top
goalkeeper; Travis Tarr who was named the William C. Schmeisser
Award winner as the top defenseman in Division II; and
WHEREAS, Attackman Mike McDonald was named the 2006 National
Championship Most Outstanding Player, having scored 7 goals in the
NCAA semifinals and 4 goals in the championship game; and
WHEREAS, The 2006 Dolphins shared noteworthy attributes off the
field as well as in competition; individually and collectively,
they constantly exhibited good sportsmanship and scholarship,
thereby demonstrating to themselves and to others that they have an
enviable combination of talent and character which reflects
favorably upon their school and their
community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate the Le Moyne College Men's Lacrosse Team and Head
Coach Dan Sheehan on their successful season and overall team
record of 18-0 and the capture of the 2006 NCAA Division II Men's
Lacrosse Championship; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the members of the 2006 Le Moyne Men's Lacrosse Team
and its coaches.
