Men's Basketball vs. AIC 2/12/13

Syracuse, N.Y. – Ricky Hudson and Janek Schmidkunz each scored 18 points to lead American International College to a 65-51 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Tuesday night at Ted Grant Court.

Sophomore forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) was the only Dolphin to score in double figures with 13 points, nine of which came in the second half.

Schmidkunz, who scored 15 of his points in the first half, registered all 18 of his points from behind the three-point line. Hudson, AIC's highest scorer for the eighth straight game, recorded 13 of his points in the second half. Spencer Braithwaite was the third Yellow Jacket to score in double figures with 13 points, while grabbing a team-best six rebounds and dishing out a game-high six assists.

Le Moyne (11-11, 8-10 NE-10) opened the game with the first six points over the opening 3:41. The Yellow Jackets responded with 14 of the next 20 points over a span of 4:09 to take a 14-12 lead with 11:29 remaining in the first half. American International got three-pointers from Hudson and Schmidkunz in transition around a jumper by Braithwaite and then Sesoo Ikpah and Jason Perrier nailed three-pointers.

After Romich made a lay-up with 11:02 left to even the score 14 apiece, the Yellow Jackets rattled off 16 straight points over a stretch of 3:54 to take control of the game. Schmidkunz led the charge with three fast-break three-pointers, while Braithwaite had a traditional three-point play and David Campbell and Ikpah made lay-ups.

American International (8-14, 5-13 NE-10) pushed its lead to 18 with 3:28 remaining and took a 39-24 lead into the intermission.

The Dolphins opened the second half with five of the first seven points to cut their deficit to 12 with 18:14 left. Senior guard Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) knocked down a jumper and then classmate Derrek Tartt (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick/UAlbany) buried a three-pointer from the right wing.

The Yellow Jackets countered with six straight points and 11 of the next 15 points to take their largest lead of the game with 12:33 remaining. Hudson had six of the 11 points, while Schmidkunz made a three-pointer and Braithwaite converted a jump shot.

Le Moyne responded with a 9-2 run to get back within 12 with 8:17 left, but could not get any closer. Romich had four of the points, while three other Dolphins combined for the other five points.

After the teams scored two points each over the next five minutes, the Yellow Jackets converted five free throws to push their advantage to 17.

Senior forward Colin Sekal (Elkhart, Ind./Veritas Christian Academy (N.C.)/Wagner) made a lay-up and Romich made a lay-up and a three-pointer around two Braithwaite jumpers to close out the game's scoring.

Le Moyne returns to the hardwood on Saturday at the University of New Haven at 3:30 p.m.
